In order to avoid dealing with creditors directly, many people who are drowned in debt choose to obtain assistance from debt settlement firms to overcome their debt problems. These people feel that they don't have full confidence and patience to deal with their creditors as the debt negotiation process may take a long period, say about 1-2 years. In order to reduce unnecessary stress, the debtors choose to rely on third party to get rid of their outstanding balances.

In real business world, does a debt relief service provider really help the debtors to become debt free? It is very hard to say. To be frank, you need to allocate a sum of money to pay for the professional service. In United States, it is indeed hard for you to get FREE services. In some situations, if you are unfortunate, you may be trapped by scams. These unethical companies do not help to solve the debt issues. However, they even make the debtors' financial situation worse.

Most of the settlement firms claim that they are the best companies in providing debt relief services. They claim that they are good at digging the debtors out from deep debt ...
... at fast pace. In fact, the solutions provided by all the service providers are more or less the same. They are dealing with the creditors using the same negotiation style. Besides, there is no guarantee provided by the so called best companies that they can reduce the debtors' total debt by 50%.

In my personal point of view, why don't give yourself a try? You can negotiate your debt on your own since you are very clear about your financial position. The most important tool you need is a good debt settlement proposal. You can draft and submit the letter on your own. Your creditors will still respond to the letters without the involvement of the third party. Sometimes, for those individuals who are good at bargaining, they can get the approval from the creditors faster, if compared with the representatives from the debt settlement firms. In certain situations, some creditors do not want to deal with the debt relief companies as they prefer their debtors to approach them directly.

Seriously speaking, getting more debts forgiven by the creditors is not hard if you really put in your effort and patience in dealing with them. You can save a lot of costs as you don't need to pay service fee to a settlement company.
