The American South is famed for offering, among activities, great opportunities for hunters and wing-shooters. In Alabama, for example, Alabama deer hunting in the Black Belt region is a bucket list item for many. Hunters from within the states of Alabama and northeast Mississippi, where the Black Belt region is located, but also from much further away, visit the region every season to add to their fondest memories.

BLACK BELT EXPLAINED – SOME HISTORY

The region that is described with the term ‘Black Belt’ originally only referred to the area in the above-mentioned states, and primarily for its dark (virtually black), rich, fertile soil. It stretches across several counties in the states and is popular with hunters from all over. The term later took on greater pollical and social meaning too to honor, as it were, the slaves of the 19th century whose labor on the cotton plantations helped develop the agricultural industry. Today hunters and visitors come to the Black Belt to partake in some great hunting opportunities at good hunting lodges such as, for example, west Alabama’s Westervelt Lodge.

FERTILE ...
... SOIL

Because of its fertile soil, the Black Belt region is ideal for growing crops (such as cotton), harvesting good timber and also for raising quality animals, such as whitetail deer and other species. The region is also naturally home to huge flocks of birds that wing-shooters come to harvest every year, which include the ever-popular dove, quail and pheasant, among some of the most populous bird concentrations. For the whitetail deer hunter, for example, Alabama’s Black Belt is one of the most popular, most visited regions of the South where hunting has become a huge industry, filling the state coffers, allowing lodge owners to run profitable businesses and for visiting hunters to enjoy one of their passions.

CREATING THE IDEAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Even though the Black Belt is known for its rich and fertile soil, there is no guarantee that a certain tract of land, or a hunting lodge, will attract great deer herds, since we all know that these animals – in a free-range environment – will not be contained and confined to a specific region or area. They roam and ‘settle’ where conditions suit them and where they can, under ideal circumstances, thrive and raise their young.

This means the habitat needs to provide for them the water, food and shelter they need to grow into healthy buck and doe’s and where they live in an area where their offspring will thrive too. The Black Belt of Alabama is ideal for this scenario, where deer live in a habitat that suits their nature and provides for them what they need. Farmers and lodge owners further do their best to ensure that ideal circumstances are created by planting additional food plots for birds and deer to ensure they have what they need in the region to keep them there.

LAND MANAGEMENT

Planting food plots, as referred to briefly above, is one of the land management plans in place on the best lodges. There are, however, many more systems that can be put in place to ensure that deer thrive on the land. The best lodges are well aware of the fact that good management principles go a long way in creating the ideal habitat for the animals. That is why they employ the services of well-educated wildlife biologists who have the knowledge and experience to manage the land in accordance with accepted, scientifically proven principles, such principles put in place to ensure great herds, which, ultimately, benefits the deer hunter that visits the Black Belt region of Alabama. Good land management practices are often at the heart of raising quality deer for the hunt.

THE LODGE

Once the hunter has done some research and come across the best hunting lodges, they are ready to make more great memories.
