Mobile Broadband technology allows you to access the internet from anywhere, even abroad, and without the need of a phone line. This simplicity and convenience means is it is fast gaining in popularity.

The way it works is by connecting you to the web via the same signal as mobile phones. Using a portable USB modem, otherwise known as a 'dongle' that is plugged into your PC, or an inbuilt data-card, the pre-installed software automatically loads and picks up the signal of your broadband provider. It couldn't be easier.

There are now a range of mobile broadband packages available on the marketplace. The following guide will help you understand this technology so you can choose the best internet deal for your needs.

Choosing the Right Mobile Broadband

Similar to mobile phone tariffs, you will first need to consider whether a pay-as-you-go deal or a long term contract will suit you best. Secondly, it's important to do your research on what's available in the marketplace, considering factors such as which providers have the best coverage, how much download capacity you need in gigabytes per month and ...
... the internet speed you require. Also look out for any added extras providers might offer on their packages.

Compatibility of Mobile Broadband to your PC

As long as you have a USB port and dongle or a datacard, you should generally be able to access mobile broadband on a simple plug-and-play basis. One thing to check however is the compatibility of the dongle or data card to your current operating system - not all will operate on a Mac or a Linux system, but most will work fine if you have more recent Microsoft Windows systems such as Vista, XP and Windows 7.

Using Mobile Broadband Abroad

Some mobile broadband providers, in particular those that offer pay-as-you-go deals, put a block on internet access from outside the UK. Other providers allow access in any country they have an agreement with. It must be said though that while prices for this type of access have gone down in Europe, the service is still fairly expensive.

Pros and Cons

While mobile broadband opens up an exciting new avenue for affordable, simple internet access on the go, it must be remembered that the technology is still in its infancy. The main drawbacks of this internet option are coverage, usage allowances and stability. Another issue with mobile broadband is speed - while providers currently advertise from 'up to' 3.6 - 7.2Mb, the reality for most is approximately in the region of 1-2Mb. This should be fine for basic internet needs such as emailing and web browsing, but for large downloads, gaming and streaming data you could find yourself struggling. All in all it comes down to your individual needs. These issues are continually being ironed out and improved, but if a super fast and ultra reliable connection is crucial to you, for the time being internet access using a fixed landline is currently still your best option.

Package Options and Cancellation

As with traditional internet, mobile broadband providers differ widely in the packages and terms they offer, so it's important to research this before you go ahead and commit yourself. If you're not sure whether this option will be right for you, it's wise to consider first taking out a pay-as-you-go deal so that you won't be tied into a lengthy contract if it doesn't work out. On the other hand, even if your provider doesn't offer a 'cooling off' period (usually around 2 weeks), the UK's distance selling regulations for online buying ensure you will always be able to return the product within 7 days if you're not satisfied. Be aware though that as with fixed-line or mobile phone contracts, if you sign up and want to cancel a month or more later, you could be liable to pay for the full term of the contract whether or not you use the product. Providers will sometimes waive this in exceptional circumstances, but each case is treated individually, so there are no guarantees and being able to completely stop the payments you've agreed on for the term of your contract is very rare.

The above information will help you decide whether mobile broadband is the right choice for you. As with any new product on the marketplace, it's crucial to research the options available as well as carefully consider your particular needs.
