Rakshabandhan- Celebrating The Sublime Bond With Rakhi
The festival of Rakshabandhan has a religious and emotional significance attached to Indians. Rakhi is not just a decorative thread but a symbol of selfless love between a brother and his sister. The magnificent Indian history strengthens the roots of Indian culture. Even after centuries, the integrity of an Indian family remains because of the strong social and moral values every Indian child imbibes from his/her parents. Most importantly, Indians respect relationships and celebrate the legacy of their ancestors on different festivals round the year. On the full moon day of the Shravan month according to the Indian calendar, brothers and sisters celebrate their sublime bond. They make the day special for their relationship, acknowledging the affection towards each other. On Rakshabandhan the brother promises the sister to protect her till his last breath. The sister ties the sacred thread of Rakhi on the brother's wrist praying for his well being and prosperous long life. Exchanging gifts and sweets is considered to be very auspicious on this day.
The rituals of Rakshabandhan begin with the sister decorating the Rakhi ...
... Thali. Thali is usually a round silver plate embellished with red cloth, golden lace and glitters. They put rakhis along with it, light a diya for ‘aarti' to save her brother from all the evils. Add vermillion like substance and rice to apply on her brother's forehead as a good omen. Place sweets or chocolates to have it followed by the ritual of tying Rakhi. The Brother blesses the sister and gifts her things like sari, salwar kameez, hand bag, jewelry or stuff toys. Now a days, Rakhi comes in many varieties starting form simple red thread one to diamond studded, gold Rakhi, pearl Rakhi to fancy and Rakhi for kids, silver Rakhi and with decorative material upon it. In a spectrum of colors Rakhis are available in all innovative designs.
The Festival of Rakshabandhan is one of the oldest in the Indian history. It was been followed my kings too. Abiding to the ritual brought harmony among many kingdoms and united the royal families. 300 BC has the oldest reference of the festival as King Puru accepted King Alexander's wife as his sister and during the war he refrained from executing Alexander. Emperor Humayun moved by the feelings sent in the Rakhi by Rani Karnavati, without wasting any time set off with this troop to defend the invasion of the Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah.
