An Intro To Iot And How It Works?
In the realm of the internet, we have come to recognize and appreciate it as a vast reservoir of data—a medium seamlessly interlinking our global community.
Undoubtedly, the internet stands as a testament to human ingenuity, yet it does not represent the pinnacle of our civilization's potential.
Another revolution is afoot, and it has been aptly named the Internet of Things or the IoT. As its name suggests, the main components of IoT revolve around things - physical objects such as devices and, in some cases, even people.
IoT takes these “things” and binds them together in an interlaced network to facilitate the myriad requirements of the evolving world.
Before getting into the depth of this topic, it is very important to understand the meaning and significance of the Internet of Things, so keep on reading!
Understanding the Internet of Things
Today’s uber-technocratic world is defined by connectivity. Technology has permeated every aspect of our lives, making it impossible to imagine life without it.
It started with smartphones and smartwatches; now, even smart homes ...
... and smart cities are no longer a reality-ridden dreamscape. The age of information has connected machines and lives to an astounding degree.
Amongst these exceptional feats, the Internet of Things is a harbinger of a connectivity revolution. Its potential is limitless, as it can reshape entire industries and completely redefine how we live and interact with humans and machines.
The components of IoT come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. And you might be questioning what are these components or “things” as we have been referring to them. Let us take a gander.
What are the Things in the IoT?
What is a thing? Quite the philosophical question. But no need to get all deep in this case. A thing, in this case, is simply any physical object that has been implanted with electronic devices that allow it to be connected to other devices and things.
This can include a person with an implant that monitors heart rate, a self-driving car, and even a domesticated animal. As long as the thing gains the ability to transfer information over a network, it falls under the purview of the Internet of Things.
Any object, whether existing in nature or man-made, that can be given an Internet Protocol (IP) address can be classified as a thing.
Consider this: The internet, as we all know, connects computers around the globe. But now, it’s possible to connect almost any device over a network to transfer information, interact with other devices, and control from a remote source.
How Does the Internet of Things Work?
The things that we defined earlier come together to create a comprehensive ecosystem. This interlaced network of co-linked sensors, devices, and cloud-based networks facilities device systems to amass, assess, and interchange data and information while executing operations based on the collected data cluster.
There are specific steps involved in the complex operations and executions that take place amongst the components of IoT. Here’s a detailed explanation of the IoT’s working:
Physical Device Level: IoT starts with physical objects known as things. These things are implanted with devices or sensors that connect them to a larger network layer. These sensors include illumination monitors, motion or pressure detectors, thermometers, etc. The list is endless. The sensors allow the things to capture data from their local surroundings.
Establishing connectivity: Once the data has been gathered, it must be transferred to the overarching network. The flexibility of IoT is very handy here as the data can be transported over any network, including Wi-Fi, RFID, cellular networks, Bluetooth, etc. The choice depends on the required data transfer range and other factors.
Information processing and storage: Usually, cloud services act as data repositories since singular devices aren’t typically capable of handling vast quantities of data. Specific software is used to process the data, analyze it and then execute operations based on the analysis. AI algorithms are often implemented in this step.
User Empowerment: The processed data is shared with the users through a user interface available on convenient devices, thus empowering the users.
These components of IoT work simultaneously to create an ecosystem defined by its hyper-connective and convenient nature.
Understanding the Working of IoT Through Examples
The characteristics of IoT primarily include the vast applicability and flexibility of use in various industries. Let us briefly shift our gazes toward some of the applications of IoT. This offers a more comprehensive understanding of how it functions and elevates our lives.
Smart home appliances are all the rage in the modern world. Alexa and Google Home have taken over this landscape. They can control things like bright lights, smart TVs, thermostats, etc.
Some appliances, like home security systems, can even function autonomously. You can command these devices to take in data through your voice or other inputs and act on them by switching on appliances, for example.
You can also program things like your thermostat or your smart refrigerator to maintain a specific temperature depending on the data reading they gather from their environment.
IoT has also allowed for some monumental achievements in the field of healthcare. Simple things like a pacemaker help thousands of people to keep living their lives.
Elon Musk, with Neuralink, is changing the way differently enabled individuals interact with technology by gathering data directly from sensors implanted in their brains and using it to control their devices.
Wearables are another simple monitoring system that empowers users and other professionals to monitor the users constantly.
Conclusion
These beneficial characteristics of IoT have already made a defining mark on the lives of today. It connects humans and machines in a way that makes the future reality of today.
The components of IoT all work in tandem to achieve marvelous feats that range from simply turning on a light bulb to saving lives and changing them for the better.
