When it comes to proving English language proficiency for studying abroad, one popular test often comes to mind: the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). However, let us talk about a newly emerging test that is applicable for all the popular study abroad destinations: The Pearson Test of English Language (PTE). While both tests serve the same purpose, PTE is gaining recognition as an easier and more accessible alternative to IELTS. In this blog, we will explore why PTE is considered the easier choice and provide helpful tips for each section of the test. Additionally, we’ll shed light on the test’s structure, AI-based assessment pattern, and some ways it is much easier than IELTS.

The PTE Test:

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a completely computer-based English language proficiency exam recognised globally. It assesses your abilities in different aspects of the English language using artificial intelligence, ensuring objective, unbiased and consistent evaluation.

The exam is held every day, and booking an appointment at least 14 days in advance is advisable so you can reschedule ...
... for free if required. The PTE exam costs are Rs. 15,900 /-.

The exam is evaluated within each section a score range of 10 to 90 points. An overall score of 60 is required as an entry criteria for most countries like Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Also, a score of 60 needs to be achieved in each individual section of the test as well – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Ease of PTE Compared to IELTS:

1. No Human Interaction: Unlike IELTS, which involves face-to-face speaking with an examiner and assessment through a human examiner, PTE has virtually no human interaction. This aspect is advantageous for test takers who may feel more comfortable speaking into a microphone rather than engaging in a live conversation, and it also helps to easily prepare for keywords and answer templates, which would help get a higher score.

2. Computer-Based Assessment: PTE is entirely computer-based, allowing for a standardised and automated evaluation process. The use of AI ensures consistency and fairness in scoring, reducing potential biases. It also means a quicker result, usually delivered in 2-3 days.

3. Easier Format: PTE incorporates an easier repetitive format, particularly in the reading section. Unlike IELTS, where reading comprehension questions vary, PTE focuses on repeated interaction with the text displayed on the screen. This pattern allows test takers to score higher than other types of assessments.

Section Tips:

1. Speaking: Listen to audio prompts and repeat the words or sentences you hear. Practice speaking naturally, focusing on pronunciation and intonation. Take advantage of online resources and mock tests to become acquainted with the question types.

2. Writing: Organize your ideas logically and manage your time effectively. Improve your score by following essay templates and practising writing tasks within the given time frame. Seek feedback from teachers or language experts to improve your writing proficiency.

3. Reading: Skim the passage before reading the questions to gain an overall understanding. Highlight key information and manage your time efficiently. Familiarize yourself with the repetitive nature of the reading section to adapt to the format. Remember, some of the test sections are grouped. For example, questions for Reading would also count towards the score for Writing.

4. Listening: Concentrate on the audio as unlike IELTS, it would be very short, and you’d have to repeat what you have heard. Take notes only when necessary. Practice active listening and pay attention to keywords and context. Utilise online resources that offer listening exercises similar to those in the PTE test.

Conclusion:

PTE offers a convenient and reliable way to demonstrate English language proficiency for study or immigration purposes. With its computer-based format, absence of human interaction, and repetitive sections, PTE is considered an easier and more accessible alternative to IELTS for many test takers. By following the provided tips and practicing regularly, you can confidently navigate each section of the PTE test and unlock new opportunities in your English proficiency journey.
