It’s no secret that what you eat and drink impacts your oral health. That’s one of the reasons dentists encourage their patients to keep their consumption of sugary foods and drinks to a minimum – it’s a recipe for cavities!
Over the past decade or so, the rise of the craft beer scene has made this alcoholic beverage more popular than ever before. Whether you like trying the latest, craziest flavor or you enjoy sticking to the classics, here’s how beer affects your oral health.
So, How Does Beer Affect Your Oral Health?
As with most things, moderation is key. If you’re enjoying a glass or two of beer every now and again while maintaining a solid oral hygiene routine and well-balanced diet, you likely don’t have anything to worry about. However, it’s always a good idea to be informed of how what you consume impacts your oral health. When it comes to beer, there are a few things to keep in mind:
• Acidity – When the pH levels in your mouth fall below 6.2, enamel demineralization can occur. Since beer typically falls between a pH level of 4.0 and 5.5, it’s possible for frequent consumption ...
... to leave you vulnerable to tooth decay.
• Saliva Production – Alcoholic beverages can dehydrate your body, reducing your saliva production in the process. This allows food particles, plaque, and other debris to cling to your teeth for extended periods of time, which can result in cavities.
• Sugar – Although beers aren’t typically sweet, they can be packed with sugar. Unfortunately, this sweetener can eat away at your enamel, increasing your risk of developing a multitude of serious oral health issues.
• Discoloration – Like any dark-colored drink – from coffee to soda – beer can leave your teeth looking yellow and discolored. Although this won’t necessarily impact your oral health, it can take a significant toll on your self-confidence.
5 Ways You Can Keep Your Teeth and Gums Healthy
Fortunately, you don’t have to avoid beer entirely and stick to only water to keep your smile healthy. Instead, make sure to adopt good oral hygiene best practices, like:
• Visiting your dentist for a checkup and cleaning semi-annually.
• Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash consistently.
• Using the right oral hygiene tools, like a soft-bristled toothbrush.
• Avoiding unhealthy dental habits, like smoking and biting your nails.
• Not consuming sugary foods and drinks in excess.
Naturally, if you have any questions about your oral health, need recommendations on oral hygiene products, or need a refresher on proper brushing and flossing techniques, you can always get in touch with your dental team!
