As a lay person who enjoys driving the car you will know something about the various components that make up your car. As cars have evolved so has the advertising for the cars and often these advertisements educate the consumer about the various components and assemblies that make up the car. For example in the old days car buyers would have known just that there is an engine, then they got to know its size in cubic centimeters, then the number of cylinders it has, then how the fuel is injected and how it is ignited and so on. For some other components too the knowledge of the average car buyers improved. Such as the car tires, the car's suspension and so on.

So would today's car buyer be conversant with a large number of components that make up the car? Well certainly to some extent but there are still huge knowledge gaps for the average car buyer. Take for example a product such as the brake rotor. Brake rotors are one of the toughest parts of your car. The engine may be the one responsible for making the car gather speed, but one of the component that takes away all the speed and helps bring the car to a safe slower ...
... speed is the brake rotor. And at times we are required to stop much much more quickly then we got it going in the first place. At such times you can imagine the work load on the brake rotors which have to very quickly take away all the kinetic energy.

There are different types of brake rotors available for different types of needs. Since brake rotors stop the car with the help of friction a lot of heat and also some gas is generated. There are therefore holes provided on the rotors for the heat to dissipate and the gases to escape. But the holes reduce the available area for producing friction. Therefore there are slotted brake rotors which have slots instead of holes and therefore do not lose out on the area available to generate friction much.
