The purpose of acne treatment is to reduce oil and bacteria buildup, unclog pores, and clear the skin of blemishes. There are many ways to treat acne, including lifestyle changes, topical medication and oral medicine. In some cases, medical procedures are also used to treat severe acne or acne that has not responded to other treatments.
Acne is a common condition that results from the skin’s hair follicles becoming clogged with oils, dead skin cells and other debris. These clogs lead to pimples, blackheads and cysts. Various medications are available to reduce acne breakouts, including anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, retinoids and some oral contraceptives. There are also a number of alternative remedies that can be used to prevent and treat acne scars, such as herbal, organic and “natural” products. However, these agents are not well-studied and are unlikely to be as effective as other treatments.
People with mild acne can often get their blemishes under control by using an over-the-counter or prescription cleanser. Acne cleansers usually contain ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, or salicylic ...
... acid, which dry out excess oil and promote peeling. They may also contain astringents that help shrink and tighten pores or other substances such as eucalyptus, menthol, or sulfur.
It is recommended to wash the skin twice a day with a gentle soap or cleanser made for acne-prone skin. Avoid excessive scrubbing, which can irritate the skin and cause it to become more inflamed. Avoid squeezing or popping pimples, as this can push the infection deeper into the skin and cause inflammation, redness, and scarring.
When a pimple is ready to burst, it should only be done by a doctor or nurse with surgical instruments and under strict hygienic conditions. Squeezing or popping a pimple can cause inflammation, redness and possibly permanent scarring.
Over-the-counter and prescription anti-inflammatory drugs such as adapalene, benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin can help reduce the size of cysts and nodules, decrease redness and swelling, and encourage skin peeling and cell turnover to keep pores unclogged. They may be used alone or in combination with other treatments such as azelaic acid, retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids.
Oral antibiotics such as tetracycline, minocycline, erythromycin and doxycycline can decrease the bacteria on the skin that cause acne by killing the bacteria or altering the way the body produces and stores sebum. These are often combined with other medications such as azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide or a topical steroid.
Some individuals can benefit from a more aggressive approach to treating acne, such as drainage and extraction of cysts or nodules under the skin. During this procedure, the doctor manually drains the fluid, dirt, pus and dead skin from the cyst or nodule. This can be very painful and is typically performed in a physician’s office, but it is not covered by most health insurance plans. In some cases, a steroid injection can be given to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. For those with severe acne, a dermatologist can prescribe oral and/or injected medications to reduce infection, reduce scarring and prevent future outbreaks.
