These identified disciplinary practices will be classified in reference to the different classification of parenting styles and various ways in which these practices can be modified to elicit even more positive outcomes identified.
Children begin testing waters in as early as nine months old. At this point, a parent should come up with the most appropriate practices to start using in disciplining the child. One of the strategies that can be used is setting rules and giving directions. Most children may not have knowledge of the practices that may be wrong or right. Therefore it important for the parent to set rules and to show their children what is right. For instance, a parent can simply tell their children not do a certain practice. For instance, a child who may tend to use abusive language can simply be instructed not to do so. For instance as a parent, one can tell their child not to use abusive language since it not morally upright. This discipline practice falls under authoritative parenting style since the parent simply gives guidelines to the child. The practice can be modified to elicit more positive outcome ...
... by the parent guiding the children into coming up with rules or guidelines on what is right or wrong. This way, the children will develop the right discipline without coercion.
The other practice that can be used to impact discipline on the child is giving choices to the children and teaching consequences. For a child who is in kindergarten, it is necessary for the parent to start giving choices and consequences of the behavior that the child display. This usually helps the children at an early age to realize that it is compulsory for them to have good behavior (Parents, 2013). Automatically, the children will embrace good discipline and refrain from engaging from practices that may be wrong. For instance, a parent can tell their child that they either have to have to play safely or else one will get injured. Or else other parents will tell their children that they have to be discipline of they will be forced to find another place to live. This practice falls in between authoritarian and authoritative parenting strategy. This is because the parent somehow demands obedience but at the same time also offers guidelines and support to their children. This practice can be modified to elicit more positive outcomes by parents taking it as a method of teaching their children where they often spend time with their children showing them the bad side of engaging in wrong practices. This will create a connection between the child and the parent and still instill good values in them.
The last practice that can be used to impact discipline on the children is corporal punishment. Even after the child has been guided on what is right or wrong and after they have been given choices, they may still tend to embrace the wrong practices. The parent can take further initiative and use coercive measures such as spanking the child or flogging him. This can serve as a good example to the child and also stress the importance of embracing the right discipline. For instance, a child who constantly lashes out at others in school or at home should be flogged to ensure that they refrain from this behavior. Inflicting pain can sometimes help in putting sense into the child.
This practice falls under authoritarian parenting strategy due to the aspect of punishment in the strategy. However, the kind of corporal punishment that the parent decides to use should be modified based on the age of the child. For very young children less than five years, the parent can simply spank the child than in the case of children who are mature and can be flogged. This practice should also be combined with non-coercive measures such as reminding the child on the guidelines so as to cement good discipline in them. Therefore, it is very important for the parent to pay attention to the discipline of their children and to come up with appropriate ways to teach them and correct them when they go wrong.
