A car diagnostic tool, otherwise known as a scanner, is an electronic gadget that reads data from your car's onboard computer system. The scanner reads your car's error codes and translates them into something that is more comprehensible to car owners. With a car diagnostic tool or scanner, you can find out the root cause of problems with your car, get useful information about its performance and general health, and even reset your car's error codes. Here is how to use a car diagnostic tool or scanner effectively.

The first step is to get the right scanner for your car. There are various types of scanners, but the most common one is the obd2 scan tool. This scanner works with cars manufactured from 1996 onwards and is compatible with most brands of vehicles. However, there are more advanced scanners for specific car models, and it is best to find out the appropriate scanner for your car before making a purchase.

Once you have the right scanner, find the diagnostic connector under the dashboard ...
... on the driver's side. This is where the scanner connects to your car's onboard computer. You may need to consult your car's manual to locate the connector. The connector is usually round or rectangular and has a symbol or label that indicates the diagnostic plug.

Next, plug the scanner into the diagnostic connector. Turn the ignition to the "on" position but do not start the car. The scanner will then display a menu of options. Select the option to read your car's error codes. The scanner will retrieve error codes from the car's computer and display them on the screen. The error codes will provide you with information about the problems with your car, whether it be a fault in the transmission, the brakes or something else.

Once you have obtained the codes, you can reset them or fix the issues depending on the severity of the problem. The obd2 scanner will provide you with further details on how to reset the codes and what needs to be done to resolve the issue. It is important to note that sometimes errors may not require a fix, but you may need to monitor the car's performance to ensure that the error is not recurrent.

With the scan tool, you can identify small issues before they become big ones and get a better idea of your car's performance and health. However, it is essential to choose the right scanner and know how to use it correctly. If you have any concerns or are unsure about using a scanner, it is best to consult a mechanic for assistance.
