The surgical procedure known by its popular name as the ‘eyelid lift is carried out by a surgeon that is registered to perform oculoplastic surgery. This surgeon is allowed to perform a wide range of surgeries to correct issues related to the areas around patients’ eyes, such as the lids, brows, and forehead.

These surgeons are normally ophthalmologists (specialist doctors with general medical, as well as advanced training to work on the eyes and the surrounding areas and tissues) with special training and expertise in plastic, also reconstructive, surgery that offer their services for both functional and aesthetic reasons. This means they work on the facial areas around the eyes to either correct a medical problem or to merely ensure that their patients’ appearance improves. The oculoplastic surgeon is a professional that deals with a great variety of surgeries related to the eye orbit, the tear ducts, the face, and the eyelids.

The medical term for the eyelid lift is ‘blepharoplasty’ and can be performed on either (or both at the same time) the upper lid and the lower lid. The blepharoplasty that ...
... is performed as an under-eye surgery has become extremely popular in recent decades, and oculoplastic surgeons perform these often. Some surgeons that specialise in the under-eye type of blepharoplasty perform these all the time, often multiple times a day, especially in a big city such as London with its good medical facilities and eye hospitals such as, say, Moorfields where leading oculoplastic surgeons such as Miss Pari Shams – and others – are well known for the surgeries they perform in this regard.

Reasons to have the procedure done may differ from one patient to the next, but for many that book an under-eye blepharoplasty, it is merely for cosmetic, or aesthetic reasons, in other words, to improve their appearance so that they look more youthful one more, which is understandable, since the eyes and the immediate area surrounding the eyes are normally those that people notice first about other people, either during conversation or when they pass one another.

How we present ourselves to the world and other people plays a big part in our self-confidence and feelings of self-worth, which is why under-eye blepharoplasty has become so popular. Ptosis, or blepharoplasty to the upper eyelid, is also performed all the time, but mainly for true medical reasons to correct, say, an upper lid that droops over the eye and interferes with one’s vision.

The under-eye blepharoplasty, the eyelid lift, is done all over the world and has become, in the US, for instance, one of the top 5 cosmetic procedures requested by people. The lift of the bottom eyelid accomplishes a great deal: it can help reduce dark circles and rings under the eyes as well as that puffiness that can make you look years older; your appearance can change from one that looks tired all the time to a person that appears to be fresh and interesting.

Blepharoplasty is, therefore, performed to remove old, excessive skin from around the eye that, as a result of aging and reduced elasticity, makes a person look tired and unattractive. This surgery is quite common and one of the most requested procedures, and fairly straightforward. Therefore it is, typically, performed as an outpatient procedure, provided the patient visits a surgeon with great knowledge and the expertise needed to ensure a good outcome.

Local anesthesia is, generally speaking, the only sedation required, and after approximately 45 minutes the procedure is done and the patient is ready to leave – although with strict instructions for aftercare from the surgeon. Of course, patients should be monitored and reported for follow-up visits so that the surgeon is satisfied that the procedure was a success and the patient is ready to resume a normal routine.

There are several procedures for under-eye blepharoplasty that the surgeon will discuss with the patient before the time to ensure that every individual patient receives the best blepharoplasty for their profile.
