The pastry is amongst the most popular of all sweet dishes and is often used as a dessert or snack by people. The dish originated in ancient Egypt where it was used to store meat and was later introduced as a dessert in the Middle East and then Europe.

A red velvet pastry is appealing to people from all age groups for the following reasons

They have bright and fun colours with attractive designs that are unique for both children and adults. The red colour is pleasing, making it difficult for people to take their eyes off it. For adults, the red colour represents a royal crimson colour making them feel like they are eating something exciting. For children, this colour represents a bright and fun-looking colour that makes their food more fun to eat.

Red velvet flavour symbolises a significant historical event as it was cut on 19th June 1865, which was Emancipation or Freedom Day or Anticipation Day. Emancipation Day celebrates freedom from 300 years of slavery in the former colonies of Europe in the Caribbean. The red colour symbolises the bloodshed faced by soldiers during the war who got freedom from slavery.

This day originated in the 1800s in South America, however, for adults and the older generation that appreciates history, this flavour serves as an important historic symbol.

The red velvet pastry also includes a soft, moist, and crumbly texture making it a delicacy that is easier to chew. This is why it is an appealing dish for both children and older people who prefer softer and crumblier dishes that are easier to chew and swallow than harder and more dry cakes like brownies.
