Challenges In Cat Preparation
Learn about the various CAT preparation challenges and how to overcome them with the help of best home tutors for CAT preparation.
In this article, we will decode the CAT challenge in terms of the various competencies that the test is intended to assess. We have identified three types of competencies for this purpose:
* Technical Competence
* Contextual Competence
* Behavioral Competence
* Technical Competence
The term 'technical' does not limit the test to a specific genre or field such as Engineering, Medicine, or Commerce, for example. Students from all graduation streams, on the other hand, are eligible to take the exam. Technically, it refers to two of a manager's most important tools: numbers and words! The test is designed to assess a candidate's dexterity in both of these domains. Questions can be classified into four categories:
Quantitative Ability
This source contains discrete mathematics questions from topics such as Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Modern Math. The majority of these topics appear to be related to matriculation math, but the difference is in ...
... the way the questions are constructed and the fact that the questions are designed to assess key management skills. For example, proficiency in Arithmetic may indicate a superior understanding of symmetry and patterns, whereas proficiency in Geometry may indicate a superior understanding of pictorial representations and space.
Data Interpretation –
In this section, the questions assess your data comprehension and data processing skills as demonstrated by various statistical tools. Questions are based on line graphs, bar graphs, numerical data tables, pie charts, or combinations of these, and are designed to assess the candidate's ability to handle similar challenges as future business managers.
Logical Ability –
In this section, questions are designed to test one of the most important aspects of managerial acumen - logic! In the questions, various types of situations are created, such as arrangements, logic trees, coding, and so on. The candidate's ability to analyze the information provided and reach logical conclusions demonstrates strong management abilities.
Verbal & Reading Comprehension –
This section assesses the candidate's ability to manipulate alpha numeric data, as presented in topics such as usage and grammar, critical reasoning, and reading comprehension. Questions are designed to separate managers with strong communication and reasoning abilities from the rest of the pack using a careful application of verbal reasoning.
Contextual Competence
This competence quotient represents the skills that managers must use on a regular basis. This competency is demonstrated in the following CAT challenges with the help of personal tutors for MBA exam:
Prioritization –
As candidates navigate the maze of questions structured into different sections, with different instructions constraining them in different years, this skill becomes crucial in determining which section (if applicable)/question should take precedence over the others. Managers require it at all times to ensure proper resource and time allocation.
Change Management –
In the fast-paced business world, the only constant is 'change.' CAT has captured the essence of this statement by incorporating a consistent element of change from year to year. This modification was implemented through parameters such as the number of sections, the number of questions, the difficulty level of the questions, the inclusion of non-MCQ questions, and so on. The successful candidates can manage this challenge competently and demonstrate that they are developing into smarter managers.
Time Management –
The management context becomes increasingly important in the CAT as candidates strive to complete as many attempts as possible in this timed task. Taking decisions such as level of engagement and timely exit in response to the various questions vividly tests these potential managers' time management skills!
Strategy –
The sequence of steps devised by a candidate to answer a specific question demonstrates her strategic approach to problem solving, which is essential in the business world.
Behavioral Competence
Managers must maintain a calm and balanced demeanor while operating in a high-stress corporate environment. Given this, it is critical that they demonstrate behavioral competence. On a more intricate level, the CAT checks this behavioral appropriateness in the following ways:
Engagement/Motivation –
This is the candidates' ability to stay engaged with a question/section despite obstacles. A bad question has a cruel disturbing dimension that is likely to irritate the test taker. Such circumstances put the candidates' motivation to the test.
Conflict Resolution
Conflicts are unavoidable in the business world, and those who can resolve them tactfully advance as successful managers. The CAT places candidates in a variety of conflicting situations as they struggle to make decisions and either continue efforts for a specific question or withdraw quickly to minimize the overall opportunity cost.
Leadership –
Managers must demonstrate initiative and leadership. In the CAT, successful candidates always take the lead and connect with the situation with high levels of clarity and energy.
To summarize, the CAT is intended to assess a candidate's suitability for a management role by assessing her competence across various components-technical, contextual, and behavioral. Each of these elements presents a challenge for the CAT aspirant to manage and demonstrate her managerial abilities!
