Indeed, our eyes are often the area on our faces that people see first when they talk to us or are introduced to us. The old saying “The eyes are the windows to the soul” comes to mind as the eyes can show deep emotion and make us feel vulnerable, especially if the surrounding area is no longer as attractive and beautiful as it once was when we were young.

Fortunately, with the advancement in the field of medicine, so many issues can be addressed successfully today, also these unsightly bags under the eyes add to an unattractive appearance. Once they are removed and the skin around the eyes is tightened, it often feels as if one was given a new lease on life once more.

The answer is the medical procedure known as blepharoplasty, which is also referred to as an eyelid lift. This procedure can be performed on either the lid or even both at the same time when called for. The blepharoplasty can also be performed at the same time as other procedures around the eyes, for example, ptosis repair and other examples of procedures done around the eyes.

It is important to understand what blepharoplasty is, to ...
... discern between functional and cosmetic blepharoplasty. Under ‘functional blepharoplasty’ it is understood that this procedure is undertaken to repair, say, a droopy eyelid that interferes with the patient’s vision, whereas the ‘cosmetic blepharoplasty’ is performed merely for cosmetic reasons in order to improve one’s appearance, which is achieved when unsightly bags and dark circles under the eyes are removed and attended to.

These surgeries are performed by well-trained, experienced surgeons such as oculoplastic surgeons. This surgeon is an ophthalmologist, i.e. eye surgeon, and he/she diagnoses and treats various eye conditions and diseases that affect the orbit, which refers to the area behind the eyeball, the tear system, and other areas around the eyes – also the eyelids. Some of these surgeons’ specific field of interest, or specialty, refers to surgical procedures around patients’ eyes. The blepharoplasty, to either the upper or lower lid, is one such interest for certain surgeons.

These surgeries are available in bigger centers all over the world, and the person that wants a blepharoplasty performed in London, for example, has a choice of which such services are available at Moorfields Private Eye Hospital. This hospital, and other London destinations, offer patients the services of experienced oculoplastic surgeons that perform blepharoplasties and similar surgeries all the time.

Most will agree that the eye and the skin around it form an important part of facial aesthetics, which is why blepharoplasty has become such a sought-after procedure for both men and women – of all ages. Especially those whose skin starts to exhibit signs of aging. Of course, functional blepharoplasty is performed for reasons other than to merely improve appearance, as it is done to correct an eyelid that could potentially interfere with patients’ vision, such as a droopy eyelid may do: it may prevent patients from seeing properly.

The cosmetic or aesthetic procedure is performed to improve the appearance and is performed, normally, on the lower lid where signs of age present in the form of puffy, swollen, or tired-looking eyelids. This is often caused by fatty deposits and sagging skin. The surgeon can remove these easily during the blepharoplasty: a tiny incision is made along the lower lash line of the lid, or just inside the lid itself. Excess fat is now removed, or fat that may have shifted with time is repositioned to achieve the desired effect, which is to make the area around the eyelid look more attractive again.

The procedure does not take long – rarely longer than an hour for one procedure and, if both eyelids are worked on, no more than three hours. The patient can normally go home the same day; however, they should not drive or try and assume a normal routine immediately. The surgeon sends them home with care instructions and a date for a follow-up visit after, say, ten days.

Even though there may be some discomfort involved, it does not take long and within two weeks or so, you may indeed feel that the blepharoplasty has given you a new lease on life.
