For ages, boats have been used by people to travel long distances through lakes, rivers, seas, and oceans. There are very modes of transport that offer freedom and possibilities to travel and explore places across the globe; boats being one of them. If you like boats and wish to learn to draw one, you are at the right place.

In this article, we will try to learn how to sketch a simple sailing boat in a few easy steps. If you are wondering if you need sketching proficiency, then you need not worry. This guide is made for young kids to draw a simple boat without any difficulties. We assure you that by the end of the guide, you will learn how to quickly draw a boat.

Materials Required to Sketch a Boat

Let us have a look at the stuff that one would need for drawing. To sketch a boat or any simple sketch, for that matter, the following are the few things that you would need.

Drawing Sheet or Drawing Paper: You can draw on an A4-sized drawing paper or a regular-sized sheet.

Pencils and Eraser: You can make use of sketch pencils with different shades such as 2H, 4B, extra dark, etc, but regular pencils ...
... are enough as well. You will need an eraser to erase any mistakes. You might as well rub off some outlines to make the sketch a little neat.

Markers: Dark Markers can be used to border the sketch after you have drawn it. But that is completely optional.

Colors: Though we are going to learn just about sketching the boat in this guide, if you want to brighten up the sketch, you can add a bit of color to the art.

Easy Steps to Sketch a Boat

Following is a step-by-step guide that will help young kids to sketch a nice and simple boat. In this article, we are going to go through 10 easy steps to draw a boat. We are taking an example of a sailboat. However, you can make a few modifications to it, as per your choice.

Step 1: Draw a Basic Outline
Before beginning with any sketch, try to frame a basic outline of the entire sketch that is to be drawn. To begin with the basic outline of a boat, you can draw shapes like a trapezoid for the deck or the main body of the boat. You can draw triangles for the two sails of the boat. For example, a straight line for the pole to which the sails are tied.

Step 2: Draw the Pole
Now that you have the outline ready, you can begin with the accessories or other parts of the boat. Draw the pole along the perpendicular line to the base of the boat. You can draw some details at its bottom to show the stand it is connected to.

Step 3: Draw the sails
Along the triangles at the two sides of the pole, draw the sail through two curved lines that connect from the top of the pole to the bottom of the deck. The sail in the front is called the headsail and the rear sail is called the mainsail.

Step 4: Add a flag on top
On the top of the pole, you can add a little flag with the boat’s name on it, but it is optional.

Step 5: Do some detailing
You have now sketched a major part of the boat but the boat just doesn’t look complete. Add some details to make it fancy and attractive. You can do some detailing by adding wooden planks by sketching some horizontal lines on the deck of the boat. You can draw some bundled ropes on the deck. Moreover, you can draw the waves of the water, making the boat seem moving.

Step 7: Add the final touches
Add some final touches if you feel something is missing. Erase some excess lines that you drew while outlining the sketch in the beginning.

Step 8: Bordering and Coloring
If you want to make it more appealing and colorful, you can border the sketch with black markers and add some colors to the sketch as well.

Cheers! You just sketched a sailing boat!
