Jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone has always been a hugely popular topic, because in most countries there is only one operator that has the privilege of offering the iPhone on it’s network. As well as those bigger updates mentioned above, the new iOS 4 also contains a number of new smaller features, including the ability to create custom playlists on the move, 5x digital zoom for your images and videos, tap-to-focus while shooting a video, the ability to view photos based on who’s in them and where they were taken, finally the ability to change the background wallpaper on the iPhone’s homescreen, ‘Gift Apps’ †yes, you can send apps as gifts to your friends or family, a built in spell checker and also wireless keyboard support! So a whole heap of really great updates are included in this firmware, which makes it likely that everyone who owns an iPhone, whether it be the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs or the iPhone 4G †they are going to be putting the 4.0 firmware on it!

So †what is jailbreaking and how is it done? Jailbreaking your iPhone allows you to install and utilise apps, tools and code that Apple might not want you to be able to use on your device, for instance †iPhone unlocking utilities. Jailbreaking introduced a whole new scene to the iPhone industry, with many third party apps popping up that are forbidden for sale in the app store due to offering functionality that Apple wants to withhold for one reason or another. Things like enabling free VOIP / Skype calls over 3G, not just WiFi, and the ability to use your iPhone 3G or iPhone 4 as a modem without having to pay the extra charges.
