6 Tips For Cataract Surgery Recovery
During cataract surgery, the lens of your eye is removed and, in most cases, a new artificial lens is placed in its place. Cataracts cause your lens to become cloudy, eventually affecting your vision. It takes up to 6 weeks to recover fully after cataract surgery. The procedure is safe and familiar, but you need to be careful after the surgery for a better recovery. In this article, we will share with you some things you need to take care of after cataract surgery.
Drink More Water
It is advised to increase your water intake before the cataract surgery and continue drinking more water even after the surgery. Water can help with the healing process and also your eyes may feel a little drier than normal, water will be beneficial against dryness as well. Staying sufficiently hydrated during the cataract recovery process will make your eyes less dry.
Take Rest for a Few Days
It is best to take a few days off from work or any other heavy activities that might strain your eyes. You will be able to go back to work fully recovered in a few days. Your eyes will be more sensitive and you may feel irritated ...
... and uncomfortable, which will make it difficult for you to concentrate on work.
Take All the Prescribed Eye Drops
Regularly taking eye drops is an important part of recovery after cataract surgery. You will normally have two different kinds of eye drops. The first eye drop is an antibiotic eye drop and it will help to prevent any infections and second eye drop is an anti-inflammatory eye drop to help reduce inflammation after your procedure. These eye drops need to be taken exactly as prescribed, some patients may have to take them several times a day in the first week after surgery. Not taking these drops as per prescription from your ophthalmologist may lead to serious complications.
Avoid Heavy Exercises
It is important to completely relax your body for a full recovery after cataract surgery. Heavy exercises and lifting can cause intraocular pressure levels to rise. This can cause serious complications like retinal detachment, dislocation of the new lens implanted, corneal swelling or fluid buildup in the eye.
Extra Careful with the Water you Bathe
Having cataract surgery will make your eyes more sensitive to infections. Bacteria can be found in all bodies of water, including lakes, oceans, pools, and even hot tubs. These bacteria are more likely to cause an infection if you've just had a procedure like cataract surgery. When you're recovering from surgery, it's safest to avoid swimming for at least a month or two.
Don’t Rub Your Eyes
Rubbing your eyes is always a bad idea, regardless of the circumstances. It can cause infections in your eyes if bacteria are brought in from your hands. It is vital not to rub your eyes after cataract surgery. Your surgically repaired eye will be very sensitive. It is possible to damage the fragile flap created during the procedure if you rub your eye. Complications or other problems could arise if this flap is damaged.
