Swimming sets records while maintaining its No. 1 ranking, hockey continues its four-game losing streak, and gymnastics and wrestling collide. Olympic fans can buy Olympic Swimming Tickets from our website.

Dive and swim

In one of the most eagerly anticipated college swim meetings of the year, the ASU swim and dive team experienced a record-breaking weekend. At the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Saturday, the No. 1 Sun Devil men’s team defeated No. 2 Cal 211-87, and the No. 11 Golden Bears were defeated 191.5-96.5 by the Sun Devil women.

The Sun Devils won 22 events throughout the meet in front of an electrifying audience. The most thrilling moment occurred when sophomore Léon Marchand posted a time of 3:31.84 to break the 400 IM NCAA record, though. Hugo Gonzalez of Cal previously held the title.

Lindsay Looney, a redshirt junior at ASU who won all three of her events, stood out for the ladies. In the 200 free, 200 flies, and 500 free, she placed first. She also competed on the 400-free relay winning team.

But the entire weekend wasn’t without incident. ...
... The women’s team suffered a 175-122 loss to the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal twenty-four hours earlier. The men performed better against Stanford on Friday, defeating the Cardinal 186-114 for the first time in this century.

The Territorial Cup swimming competition, which takes place at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on February 4, will be the next time both teams compete. Arizona will be their guest.

Hockey

This past weekend saw more struggles for ASU hockey as they extended their losing streak to four games, losing 5-1 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday at Mullett Arena to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Olympic fans can buy Olympic Games Tickets from our website.

ASU got outplayed in game one. The Sun Devil’s lone goal came with just over two minutes remaining after the Tigers scored five unanswered goals to start the game. In game one, the Devils had five chances to score on the power play, but they were unsuccessful on all five occasions, losing 5-1.

The second game was much closer, with the Devils taking a two-goal lead early in the second period before the Tigers matched it with two goals of their own later in the frame. ASU took the lead thanks to a goal from Christopher Grando 27 seconds into the third period, but it was only temporary as RIT scored three goals in a row to reduce the gap, with Cody Laskosky scoring the game-winning goal to make it 5-3 for the Devils.

ASU has dropped five of its last six games overall and four in a row. Since an overtime loss at New Hampshire on December 10, 2022, they haven’t scored more than three goals, which is a major problem that Greg Powers and his team need to address. For a weekend series against St. Thomas that begins on Friday, Jan. 27, ASU remains in Tempe.

For the women, Lindsay Looney, an ASU redshirt junior who won all three of her competitions, stood out. She won the 200 free, 200 flies, and 500 free events. She also took part in the winning 400-meter free relay team.

But there were some mishaps throughout the entire weekend. Twenty-four hours previously, the women’s team lost to the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal by a score of 175–122. On Friday, the men outperformed Stanford, defeating the Cardinal for the first time in this century 186-114.

The next tournament for both teams will be the Territorial Cup swimming competition on February 4 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. They will be hosting Arizona.

Tennis

For the first time since 2020, the women’s team started the 2023 season with five straight victories, sweeping each of their five opponents 7-0. With victories over Bryant University and Wichita State totaling 8 to 1, the men’s squad is off to a strong start.

No member of the women’s squad has yet this season lost a singles or doubles match this. Chelsea Fontanel, a rookie, has already made an impact on the court by dominating all five of her singles matches.

The weekend’s highlight for the men’s squad was junior Jacob Bullard, who defeated Bulldog Diego Trejo (6-0, 6-2) on Saturday, and Wichita State’s Alex Richards (6-2, 6-4) in straight sets on Sunday. Bullard and freshman Roi Ginat both had two-for-two doubles performances.

In a video released to Twitter, head coach Matt Hill observed, “There was the great focus today.” “I believed we did a great job of getting what we asked for. The day was wonderful.”

The men’s team travels to Waco, Texas, for the ITA opener the next weekend. Depending on the outcome, they will play either Florida State or the University of San Diego.

The women’s team travels to Alabama for their ITA opening weekend, where they will first play UCF, then either Auburn or UCSB.

Gymnastics/Wrestling: Beauty and the Beast

The ASU wrestling team and gymnastics team battled against one another on Friday in Desert Financial Arena. The wrestlers lost against No. 28 Cal Poly 19-18, and the gymnasts lost to No. 19 Stanford 196.225-196.050, therefore neither team was able to win.

The Gym Devil now has three scores of 196 or higher for the year. Junior Sarah Clark finished the bars with a 9.875, while junior Anaya Smith closed the vault with a 9.825, leading the team in the first two competitions. On the beam, Clark also performed well, scoring her second 9.875 in the competition. Jada Mangahas lead the female competitors on the floor with a 9.875. Despite their excellent performance, the Gym Devils came in second place to the Cardinals by a slim margin.

For the men’s team, junior Jacob Bullard’s victories over Bulldog Diego Trejo (6-0, 6-2) on Saturday and Alex Richards of Wichita State (6-2, 6-4) on Sunday were the highlights of the weekend. Bullard and first-year Roi Ginat both had doubles games where they went two for two.

Head coach Matt Hill said, “There was the great focus today,” in a video posted to Twitter. “I thought we did a really good job of attaining what we wanted. The day was fantastic.”

The next weekend is the ITA debut for the men’s squad in Waco, Texas. They will either play Florida State or the University of San Diego, depending on the result.

ASU and Cal Poly shared the matches in the wrestling competition with five victories each, but neither team could secure enough points to claim victory. Richard Figueroa defeated Anthony Lorenzo 6-5 to go to 13-0 on the year.

With a 25-14 victory over No. 23 Stanford on Sunday in Palo Alto, California, ASU wrestling ended their four-game losing run. Redshirt senior Michael McGee’s 25th career tech fall victory, which he did by outscoring his opponent 16-1, was the game’s high point. Gymnastics’ next competition is when they host Arizona on Saturday, while the Maroon and Gold go to Lehigh on Saturday.

Athletic events

On Friday, the Sun Devil track and field team competed in the Red Raider Open against Texas Tech. Three gold medals and eight top-five finishes were their final results during the competition.

The 400-meter winner was junior Justin Robinson, the 800-meter winner was sophomore Dayton Carlson, and the mile winner was senior Lena Lebrun. The Sun Devils had 11 national top 50 marks after just two meets this year. Men made up seven of them, while women made up four.
