Coorg City Guide - Karnataka

Madikeri serves as the headquarters of Coorg District and is known for its eponymous fort. Constructed in granite, the fort accommodates a temple dedicated to Ganesh and a small museum. A notable sunset viewpoint is at Raja’s Seat.

There are many impressive waterfalls in Coorg including Abbey Falls, high up on the Cauvery River and surrounded by coffee and cardamom plantations where you can enjoy a scenic (and fragrant) hike.

Mallalli Falls (2 hours drive away from Madikeri town) in full-flow are particularly impressive and the beauty of the falls and surrounding verdant forest won’t be quickly forgotten. The third major fall, is Iruppu (2-3 hours drive away from Madikeri town) which is said to have holy water which will purify the soul- this makes it a very popular pilgrimage spot.

In the south of Coorg is Nagarhole National Park (3-4 hours drive away from Madikeri), a part of Project Tiger and one of the most famous wildlife reserves in South India. A mix of forest types and plentiful water sources mean this are is home to lots of elephants, many big cats and healthy ...
... numbers of sloth bears. Trekking is not permitted in the Park (due to the presence of the erstwhile tigers and leopards) but at Pushpagiri no such threats to safety exist, and there are plenty of hiking possibilities.

Trekking, rock climbing, rafting and hiking are among the adventure sports on offer different parts of Coorg, although these are largely seasonal.
