What To Know About Asthma Diagnosis

Your doctor might believe that you have asthma if you're having problems breathing, particularly if it's accompanied by wheezing and tightness in your chest.
Your doctor will do a number of tests before coming to a conclusion. You may also need to see a pulmonologist, allergist, or other specialists to ascertain whether your symptoms are caused by asthma.
There are numerous types of asthma, including allergic asthma, exercise-induced asthma, and occupational asthma. Each variety may have unique causes and signs, and each necessitates a unique method of diagnosis and treatment.
Your doctor will likely ask about your personal and medical history, do a physical examination, and order a lung function test to see if asthma is the root of your symptoms, whether you're seeing a specialist or your primary care physician. These actions entail:
A personal and medical history
Questions about your symptoms, when they happen, how long you've been dealing with them, whether anything has made them better or worse, ...
... and whether anyone in your family had asthma or breathing issues will be part of your personal and medical histories. If you keep a log or journal of your symptoms, it will be helpful to your doctor. Prior to your appointment, spend some time contemplating (or learning about) your family history.
A physical exam
Your physician will monitor your heart rate and breathing (to rule out heart problems as the cause of your wheezing). Your nose, mouth, and ears will also be checked for inflammation or irritation, which could indicate the existence of asthma or another illness. Additionally, your doctor will examine your skin for rashes and eczema symptoms, which can cause dryness and redness and are linked to allergies and asthma.
A pulmonary function test
A doctor may perform a variety of breathing tests, generally referred to as pulmonary function tests (PFTs, or lung function tests), to diagnose asthma. The following section goes into detail about several lung function tests.
Types of Lung Function Tests
Spirometry
Asthma is typically diagnosed using this test. You breathe into a mouthpiece that is attached to a spirometer during this easy breathing test. This tool gauges how much air you can breathe in and out, as well as how quickly you can exhale. These measures reveal information about bronchial tube constriction.
Peak airflow
In this exam, you'll breathe into a peak-flow meter, a tiny, portable gadget that gauges how much air you can push out at once. This test detects any airway narrowing and can detect it hours or even days before you start to feel asthma symptoms. (After being diagnosed, your doctor could advise using a peak-flow meter at home to see whether your condition is improving or worse over time, as well as whether your asthma treatment strategy is effective.)
Exhaled nitric oxide
Nitric oxide is a gas that your body usually produces and which, according to a study, is a sign of inflammation. Therefore, this test can aid in determining the degree of lung inflammation. (Since asthma is an inflammatory condition, increasing lung inflammation may be a symptom of asthma.) For this test, you will steadily exhale into a little handheld device for 10 seconds. The device will determine how much nitric oxide is in your breath.
Inhalation challenge tests
These tests gauge how you physically respond when exposed to asthma triggers methacholine or mannitol through breathing. You will inhale one of these medications in escalating doses, and your lung function will be assessed after each one. If there is a considerable decline in lung function, the test is deemed positive.
Other Tests That Can Be Helpful in Diagnosing Asthma
Imaging tests
To check for symptoms of infection or other anomalies, your doctor can perform a chest X-ray or computerized tomography scan of your lungs and sinuses.
Allergy tests
These tests can help identify whether your symptoms are caused by allergies by observing how your skin responds to a potential allergen. Blood tests can also be used to determine this.
Tests for other conditions
Your doctor might examine you for another problem, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic sinusitis, vocal cord dysfunction, heart disease, or sleep apnea, that might exacerbate your asthma or cause symptoms similar to asthma.
