tape drive
What is a tape drive?
A tape drive is a device that stores computer data on magnetic tape, particularly for backup and archival purposes. Like an ordinary tape recorder, a tape drive records data on a loop of flexible, celluloid-like material that can be both read and erased.

Tape drives use traditional spiral scan technology, where the record and playback heads touch the tape, or linear tape technology, where the heads never touch the tape. Drives can be rewound, with the device issuing a rewind command at the end of a session, or not rewound at all.

Rewind devices are often used when a tape needs to be unmounted at the end of a session after processing large amounts of data in batches. Payroll is the classic example of this usage. Non-rewind devices are useful for incremental tape backups and other applications where new files are added to the end of files from the previous session.

Tape drives differ from hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) in the way data is read from and written to storage media. Tapes store data sequentially, while HDDs and SSDs use spinning ...
... hard drives with fast-moving seek heads, stationary flash memory, or similar technology to transfer data.

Units come in many sizes and capacities. They are sold as standalone units or stacked in data center racks to create tape libraries. The tapes themselves are often housed in sealed cartridges that can be inserted into the drive and activated.

Strengths and limitations of tape drives
There are several advantages to using tape drives, particularly for backup and archiving purposes. This includes:

Capability. Tapes have a large capacity for storing data compared to hard drives.
Inexpensive. They are inexpensive compared to other storage media.
Life expectancy. Tapes stored in a suitable environment can last for decades, an important factor for archiving.
transportable. Tapes can be easily moved from one place to another and are considered offline storage.
Security. Tapes today support encryption such as Advanced Encryption Standard-256 and offer various levels of data protection.
disaster recovery. Tape is often the storage medium of choice for data backup and DR. Storing critical data and systems on tape creates an air gap between systems at risk of a cyber attack by simply removing the tape cartridge from the drive.
The disadvantages of tape technology include the following:

sequential storage. Tape drives like (https://www.allhdd.com/sony-sdt-11000-bm-tape-drive/) use a sequential access approach to reading and writing data. That is, they must start at the beginning of the tape and traverse it to access specific data or write new data.
Violet. Tape drives spin fast. When the drive finds the data to transfer, the tape should stop and rewind to the point where the data is. This start, stop and save action can be repeated several times until the right place is reached. The movement of the unit is similar to the back and forth movement of polishing a shoe. Excessive shoe polishing slows driver response time, wears out the tape and drive, and shortens the life of both.
Start and stop operation. Data to be stored on tape is typically accumulated in buffers before being transferred to tape. If the buffers are not full, the tape can be stopped and positioned for the next delivery of data from the buffers. This decreases the overall processing efficiency of the drive.
