Data Engineering has become a rising career option nowadays. Despite the fact that the number of data engineers has increased in the last year, engineering leaders continue to face a serious talent shortage. Is it thus the data warehousing industry’s future? Data engineering: What is it? In this blog article, we will respond to all of these questions and many more.

Data engineers are primarily employed at unicorn businesses like Facebook, Google, and Apple, which rely heavily on data and are primarily American companies. Aside from the startup hotspots of Berlin, Munich, etc., the job title is virtually nonexistent in Europe. They go by the names of or are employed as business intelligence engineers, big data engineers, business analysts, data analysts, and data scientists.

DATA ENGINEERING: WHAT IS IT?

The less well-known sibling of data science is data engineering. Both data science and data engineering services are booming, although the latter is far less well-known. It would be a software engineering plus business intelligence engineer with big data skills like the Hadoop ecosystem, streaming, and ...
... computing at scale, as opposed to existing jobs.

Business generates more reporting artefacts on their own, but there is also more data that needs to be gathered, cleaned and updated almost instantly, and the complexity is growing daily. With that said, more software engineering-like programmatic abilities are required. The most popular language right now is Python, which is utilised in data research and engineering with tools like Apache Airflow.

Today, SQL is used nearly exclusively by BI engineers, with the exception of situations where they need to leverage external data, like that from an FTP server. However, this is no longer sufficient, necessitating the usage of data engineering because it becomes a full-time job to create and maintain all of these requirements and rules (referred to as pipelines).

WHAT IS A DATA WAREHOUSE?

What is business intelligence engineering or data warehousing, and why do they employ a data warehouse?

You want to sell your clients very structured products in the most effective manner possible, to use the analogy of a physical retail-type warehouse. A data warehouse (DWH) often contains structured data that has been made query-friendly for business users.

If you look a bit closer, you can see where the data is offloaded from the trucks in the actual store’s back room before it is organised and stored in the warehouse for customers to purchase. In a DWH, the process is essentially the same, but with data. The DWH architecture shown below shows the offloading area towards the back.

The purpose of a data warehouse:

In addition to the plainly stated benefits of a store, a data warehouse offers the following significant benefits:

Theoretically: Converting an organization’s raw data from various sources—most of which are highly structured, like SAP, CRM, Excel, etc.—into information that is relevant and helpful and then storing it in the past.
In actuality: similar to an aeroplane’s cockpit – To control the plane and make the best decisions, all measurements and KPIs are gathered in one location.
Having access to well-structured data enables organisations to make better decisions.
– Making decisions that are supported by facts is beneficial.

– It makes corporate processes more productive.

– It raises the level of customer service quality.

The majority of the visual products produced by business intelligence built on top of data warehouses are:
Reporting on-Demand
Dashboards / Cockpits
Standard Reporting
THE DATA ENGINEER’S JOB

It is crucial to distinguish between data pipelines that are completed and cleansed by data engineers and all the others that are mostly exploratory in order to obtain high-quality and often updated data sets. All data sets created in the “cleaned” folder at Airbus are of the greatest quality, updated often, and are well-documented. You develop your own data sets based on these ones. Each data set needs documentation and metadata because, without these, you lose track of your data, which is another important responsibility.

The services a data engineer offers:

Automation of manual tasks performed by data scientists or analysts is a crucial task or service that a data engineer offers. Maxime Beauchemin, the creator of Apache Airflow, a platform that lets a data engineer lift the majority of the tasks stated, gives a clear overview of what tasks this includes:

Data ingestion includes services and tools for “scraping” databases, loading logs, and obtaining data from external storage or APIs,…
Frameworks for calculating and summarising metrics relating to engagement, growth, or segmentation
Automating data consumption to detect anomalies and notify users when they happen or when patterns dramatically change
Analytics begins with logging events and the properties associated with those occurrences; data engineers have a vested interest in ensuring that high-quality data is recorded upstream.
Technology for generating and consuming metadata, enabling easy discovery of information in and around the data warehouse.
Bottom line:

Is the data engineer, after all, the new business intelligence engineer? In the long run, we would answer yes. We believe that data warehouses, in some form or another, will always be required by businesses where data is fully structured and easily accessible. However, the way we create DWHs or comparable systems will change, necessitating the hiring of more engineering and data engineers.
