A tourist with an interest in imagining the history of freedom struggle in Bengal, experiencing the flavor of the times when British ruled Kolkata, the capital of India from 1772-1911, will find the place most challenging.

Leftovers of British domination during that long period still exist in the city as amazing European style mansions, which have preserved as heritage assets. The central point of Kolkata is its central area and also the main hub of Kolkata known as the BBD Bagh or Dalhousie Square. The name is a tribute to the three young and daring freedom fighters Binoy, Badal and Dinesh who shot dead inspector general of prison N Simpson on the corridor of Writers Building in 1930. The four storied building is now the headquarters of Bengal from administrative and political aspect. It was built in 1777 by East India Company structured in Corinthian columns, triangular pediment and arches. The red color of the building is reflected at Lad Dighi, which was once excavated in early 18th century to provide drinking water in the city. A tourist can discover the surrounding area of Dalhousie full of amazing architectures. ...
... Just to the south of the central point of Dalhousie, Raj Bhavan, the residence of Lord Wellesley, built in 1803, is a great instance of Euro-classical, Gothic revival and Greek structure. The place today works as the residence of Governor of West Bengal. Town Hall is popular as Calcutta Museum built in 1813 that served as the venue for speeches and meeting subjecting the Indian freedom fight during the nationalist movement. The gallery of faded pictures and discolored portraits of Indian and British historical figures, exposing the realities of past in front of a tourist is surely worth a valuable visit. Other vital Victorian-style constructions are GPO and Kolkata high court.

After the foundation of Kolkata in 1690, Esplanade and its associate area became the favorite hunting ground for the English till the colony was established substantially by different communities. Once it was the place for English to enjoy horse ride or sitting behind coachmen, but these days the venue is one of the major commercial centers of the state. At the centre of Esplanade, the Shahid Minar or monument is the sky touching structure of 50m height with 218 steps to climb and was built by Orchterlony in 1828 and it exists in the memory of the freedom fighters of the Indian independence struggle. Currently, it serves as a meeting point of religious gathering and political rallies.
