Bespoke Designer Decanter Sets For Red Wine Is A Popular Tool In Many Wine Lover's Collections And Doubles As Sophisticated And Elegant Centrepieces
The decanting of red wines adds a particular flair to a special dinner, when the host ceremoniously pours the wine into a glass or crystal container, showing off the sediment.
Sediment, which forms in older red wines, is safe to consume. If however it is not removed, the wine will have a murky appearance and it may add grittiness to the taste. When decanting for the sole purpose of removing sediment a narrower container is the best option.
Most types of wine can be decanted, including red, white, and rosé. Young and old wines benefit from decanting for even a few seconds, if only for the aeration. It is particularly beneficial for young variants to be decanted, as their tannins are still more intense.
Decanters come in all shapes and sizes, usually made from glass or crystal, and are all aesthetically pleasing. Some have wide bases, long necks; funnel-shaped angular necks, or smaller regular-shaped plain glass bottles.
The aroma of wine will change during the first 30 minutes after the bottle is opened. The breathing process is accelerated during decanting, which increases the wine's aromas from ...
... the natural fruit and oak barrels.
Volatile substances are allowed to evaporate during the process. Tannins responsible for the harshness and pungency in young wines are also softened during the decanting process.
Exposure to excessive amounts of oxygen will turn wine into vinegar. Therefore, when preserving wine it should be protected from these key elements in the best possible manner. There are valuable tips to preserve an opened bottle and being allowed to drink from it again.
All wine should be stored in an upright position after the opening. This will radically reduce the surface that is exposed to oxygen.
Using a professional wine preservation system is the most viable option to preserve opened wine. There are umpteen gadgets and devices available that are effective and ever so popular.
Vacuum pumps are used to suck the air out of an opened bottle, allowing it to be re-sealed hermetically by using a rubber stopper. Oxygen exposure will be kept at bay. This affordable tool is widely used in restaurants, bars, and households.
Inert wine gas preservation systems preserve opened wines but come at a premium This system is based on inserting an inert gas referred to as argon, into the bottle. Because it is heavier than oxygen it forms a protective layer on the surface of the wine.
If it is not an option to invest in a wine preservation system, it is advisable to buy smaller bottles of wine for once-off enjoyment.
The combination of a decanter for wine with a built-in preservation tool was developed by a UK-based Welsh entrepreneur. The concept is straightforward. The device holds 750ml of wine, which amounts to a standard bottle. Fitted with a plunger, by pressing down it forces out all the oxygen until it reaches the surface of the wine. This reduces oxidation to zero.
Open the bottle of red wine and pour a glass. Remove the stopper and extend the neck to the maximum. Hold the decanter/preserver at an angle while decanting the bottle through the neck. The 11cm long neck gently oxygenates the wine and the built-in sharp lip makes for drip-free pouring. Replace the stopper and push the neck down.
By performing this action, the valve will automatically lock when it makes contact with the wine. Store the decanter/preserver in a cool, dark place, or at the door of the fridge. To release the seal, gently lift the neck before pouring the next glass of wine. Lift the neck very slightly to release the seal, before pouring the next glass of wine.
