Explore Great Lakes Beaches Summer 2023
5 of Michigan’s Top 50 Rated Beaches
Michigan's 3,200 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 11,000 inland lakes, and tens of thousands of miles of rivers provide some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. In addition to private land and state parks, the state has about 1,500 public access places where you may swim, paddle, fish, and enjoy the outdoors.
The List of Top Michigan Beaches to Visit
We have difficulty determining an appropriate ranking based on several variables. We have yet to visit a beach in Michigan that we did not enjoy. This ranking list, on the other hand, is based on popularity, size, and location. Visit our page for the complete list of great Michigan beaches.
White Rock Roadside Park - Harbor Beach
Views of Lake Huron and White Rock are spectacular. Walking pathways link to a non-motorized walkway on M-25 and an observation platform. White Rock is a big, white, offshore boulder that serves as a boundary marker for the land ceded to the United States by the Native American tribes of Michigan in the Treaty of Detroit ...
... in 1807.
The stairs to the beach have been removed due to the recent high water levels. The way down is really steep and overgrown. Adequate hiking boots are required to complete the journey successfully.
Range Light Beach - Presque Isle
This is, undoubtedly, one of the best beaches in northeast Michigan. Quiet, secluded, and great for kids. It boasts a breathtaking view and a fun/clean beach. It's a fantastic spot for a quick photo op with some history - and an 1840 lighthouse. It is well-known for being a wonderful location for collecting Petoskey stones. It's a must-see.
South Shore Park - Rogers City
Rogers City, nestled on the beautiful shores of Lake Huron, is a small town with a huge secret: it is home to the world's largest limestone quarry. Children of all ages can uncover such ancient fossils from the same rock at South Shore Park. There is information and images to help you decide what you found, as well as a wash station.
Huron Shores Roadside Park - Cheboygan
This is a little side park midway between Rogers City and Cheboygan. It's a seasonal park with public restrooms located in outhouses. The way to the beach is outside the gate on the south side; however, the path is not handicap accessible, and one should take caution when walking to the beach on this sandy, narrow stretch—a gorgeous beach with numerous valuable Michigan rocks for the avid rockhound.
Agate Beach Park - Toivola
This Lake Superior campsite, 25 miles southwest of Houghton, includes primitive toilets, no power, picnic tables, a sandy beach, and tents are permitted. Lake Superior simple camping are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
A Beach Checklist - What to Bring
Arrive early in the morning. It may be difficult to find parking at certain Michigan beaches. Arriving early allows you to select a convenient parking place as well as the optimal location to lay your towel.
It is unavoidable to bring sunscreen. A sunburn may ruin a day at the beach, so carry sunscreen. Request that someone else apply sunscreen to the places that are difficult to reach.
Bring a mesh bag for your belongings. Take a purse, shopping bag, or waterproof duffel bag to store beach items such as towels, shovels, Bluetooth speakers, inflatables, and additional clothing. These bags, on the other hand, keep moisture from escaping and promote mildew growth, as well as keep beach items from drying out.
Bring plenty of towels. Remember to bring lots of fresh towels when you go to the beach. This is especially vital if you're taking little children to the beach or intend to swim.
Check! Bug spray. If you travel to the beach early in the morning or late in the evening, you may meet mosquitos, sand flies, fleas, and other pesky insects.
Be prepared for rain and high winds. Even if you're looking forward to a warm day at the beach, keep in mind that Michigan weather can change at any time. It is especially crucial if you plan to swim, so bring lots of dry items like sweaters, blankets, pants, and shoes.
Use the principles of Leave No Trace. Nobody wants to waste their day on a dirty beach. If you bring anything to the beach, you must clean up after yourself. Make care to put your litter in the appropriate trash or recycling receptacle.
