Probably because we do not think about it every day, we are not always so aware of what a gift good vision is to us. We often only realise how important it is when we experience one or more problems with our sight – or lose it.

It is always advisable to look for help at the first signs of problems, whether that is nearsightedness, farsightedness, cataracts, blurry vision, or red and swollen eyes – or any other eye-related condition that may cause distress.

One area that affects millions of people worldwide every day is the mentioned nearsightedness and farsightedness. Nearsightedness refers to a condition in the eye that causes the person to see objects clearly when they are near, but those further away become blurry and the person finds it difficult to discern their shapes and what they are. For example, even if you are fairly close by, you may not be able to read road signs or follow what is happening on a movie screen. Nearsightedness is also referred to as myopia and is often diagnosed when people are still young, even in their teens.

Farsightedness is the opposite. It is also called hyperopia. ...
... You see things more clearly when they are further away, and those close to you become blurry. You may find that you need to squint to see clearly, and you may experience one or more symptoms such as burning eyes, aching around the eyes, and, generally, eyestrain, which often leads to headaches because of the strain to discern objects. Fortunately, with medical intervention, corrective procedures can turn these conditions around so that, say, eyeglasses and contact lenses may not be necessary.
A good starting point would be to find out whether you are a good candidate for surgery to reverse the negative effects of your problem. Visiting a good eye specialist such as an ophthalmologist is a great start. Certain procedures can correct this issue. It is referred to as refractive lens exchange or replacement surgery and is done quickly, safely, and with minimum discomfort to the patient.

What it entails is a procedure that takes no longer than approximately 20 minutes per eye during which the eye’s lens is replaced with a synthetic lens. The term intraocular implant is often used to refer to the procedure. It is noted, too, that this procedure is also used when, for example, cataracts are removed: the natural lens is removed and replaced with one that was made for the patient.

The procedure can be done using either a laser or a standard procedure. The eye surgeon will discuss this choice when he/she sits down with the patient to explain and discuss all the pros and cons with the patient so that he/she is well-prepared and calm. It is safe, will not hurt the patient, and is done to correct the problems with near- and farsightedness so that patients will no longer need glasses and/or contact lenses.

The surgery is not painful, since the eye surgeon administers a local anaesthetic, or topical anaesthesia such as an eye drop to numb the eye, and other sedation, if necessary, before the time so that the patient feels no pain during the procedure. Recuperation does not take long, and any mild discomfort that may be experienced disappears after a few days. The new lens is virtually guaranteed to last forever, and in those extremely rare cases that it does not, another intraocular lens is used to exchange the implant.

This surgery was not available a few decades ago, but with advanced technology, millions of these procedures are carried out by ophthalmic surgeons every day all over the world.
