What Is Ethical Fashion And Why Should You Care
Let’s get things straight about the big confusion between ethical fashion and sustainable fashion. Why are they not the same thing?
What is sustainable is not always ethical.
What is ethical is not always sustainable.
Confused already? Let’s look at an example:
Take Jute Beach Bags: they are a timeless fashion accessory that everyone loves, and nowadays, they are becoming more and more popular as the ideal "sustainable fashion accessory".
What they mean by sustainability here is that it is crafted from natural fibers, it is biodegradable, and it might also be handmade, which adds to its artisanal value, so it is not machine-made, which creates environmental pollution.
But who is that artisan? What is in it for them?
This question brings "ethics" into the picture, which finds more ways and values to prevent that artisan from being deprived of the profits and respect that they deserve, which is equity. It also makes sure of the "Fair Trade" standards that save and compensate labor, and prevent child labor and forced labor. A happy culture
Sustainable and ethical fashion ...
... refers to a method of sourcing clothes and other fashion products, from the stage of designing, manufacturing, marketing, and supplying them to distributing the returns. Among the priorities are the following:
➔ Using eco-friendly manufacturing processes
➔ Preventing water contamination
➔ Saving water
➔ Reducing energy consumption
➔ Reducing our carbon footprint
➔ Benefiting labor, designers, suppliers, and all other contributors equally for their work, ideas, and time,
➔ Creating a harmonious society as a whole
So it's a balanced economy that includes the welfare of nature, culture, people, and livelihoods. There are many layers to it, and it takes the heed of a very mindful and conscious shopper who cares. The good thing is that so many people are receptive to the values that sustainability in the 21st Century is bent on bringing about the Green Revolution.
What Does "Sustainable Fashion" Mean
A nice t-shirt or handbag for less than half the price is undoubtedly a terrific deal, but are you aware of where and how it was made?
In the context of fashion, the term "sustainability" most frequently refers to the environmental effects of a product throughout its entire lifecycle. It starts with the methods used to source raw materials; processing, and manufacturing stages; wear and care; usability; and lifespan; and ends with the method used to dispose of the product after it has served its purpose.
From using organic materials and natural dyes to favoring biodegradability and recycled materials, everything contributes to sustaining nature and reducing our carbon footprint.
As time passes, the paradigm of sustainability is expanding to encompass more social, economic, and moral issues, such as animal welfare, social justice, and equality, which are much more important than just fabrics, ready-made clothing, and accessories.
What Does Ethical Mean in Fashion?
Fast fashion companies and supply chains frequently deprive people who have put in a lot of effort to produce the item of being fairly compensated. Many producers engage in child labor, and there is a general lack of corporate social responsibility.
While sustainability is more of a socio-ecological system, ethics is more of a corporate philosophy.
Animal testing and animal-derived materials are a big question of ethics. Killing animals or putting them through any kind of pain is prohibited by ethical producers. These values give rise to veganism, which specifies goals for animal welfare and cruelty-free products. A very good reason why an "ethical shopper" would favor jute and cotton bag manufacturers over leather bag manufacturers!
But animals and ecology are not the only concerns of ethics. Additionally, ethics in fashion also means that the supply chains and the production processes should follow fair trade. So while the jute bag is cruelty-free and eco-friendly and all, it also has to be fair trade certified!
An important component of ethical business is fair trade. It is a legal standard and a certification created to assist producers in conducting just and sustainable trade that combines fair remuneration to exporters with higher social and environmental standards. These "ethics" are being included in corporate laws worldwide to ensure that everyone receives a fair share of profits from a commodity.
Sustainable And Ethical Fashion: Looking Ahead To A Green Future
Green is not only the color of money; it is, first of all, the color of life and the environment. We are looking towards a balanced economy that takes into account the welfare of the environment, culture, people, and livelihoods. Several layers necessitate the attention of a very attentive and caring consumer. The good news is that so many people are open to the principles behind sustainability and ethicality in the 21st century, which is determined to bring about the Green Revolution. So it is generally human nature to care.
