Since 2016, BMW has incorporated several major upgrades to make its fleet of cars more reliable. Now, whenever you strike up a conversation about reliable luxury cars, the name BMW is bound to pop up.

On average, BMW cars are more reliable, comfortable, and above the industry average for longevity. It gives them an edge over their competitors.

But out of the long line-up of BMW cars, which is the most reliable. Also, which is most likely to require a BMW used engine for replacement soon?

BMW's Reliability

Any car is considered to be reliable on the basis of a few factors. Usually, these are:
• Its rate of recalls
• Mechanical issues
• And maintenance costs

Based on that metric, BMW cars are considered quite reliable. Owners don't have to worry much about their vehicle while also getting the best bang for their buck.

Following the same reliability metric, here are BMW’s most reliable models.

Most Reliable BMW Models

2 Series

The 2 Series tops the category as it won J.D. Power ...
... Dependability Awards in two consecutive years. Plus, it made the top ten on U.S. News’ list of most reliable luxury cars.
Currently, it's available as a coupe & convertible. If you're looking for an affordable entry point into BMW ownership, this is the perfect option.

4 Series

The 4 Series is slightly larger than the 2 Series. This sporty-looking car also ranks well on the J.D. Power Dependability ledger. You can buy the coupe or a convertible version of it, both are equally reliable. There are also two turbocharged BMW car engines for sale available for this.

X3

BMW X3 was awarded the reliability award in the premium compact SUV segment. It isn’t necessarily known for its SUV features. But when it comes to reliability, the X3 has no match in this segment.

Least Reliable BMW Models

Unfortunately, not every BMW is as reliable as the top models. When it comes to BMW’s least reliable cars, the X5 SUV and the M3 sedan names come to mind.

X5

Since the reliability is determined through the number of recalls, X5 has made it the least reliable BMW car. The mid-size X5 SUV has generated more recalls than any other BMW vehicle. Over the years, there have been about 133 recalls of this model. Most X5s have issues with the engine and powertrain. Some prominent ones are fuel system issues, leaks, overheating, and engine fires. If you have an X5, you’ll probably need a used BMW engine with a warranty down the line for replacement.

M3

M3 is the sportier version of BMW’s beloved 3 Series sedan. It is a true car lover’s dream but too prone to recall. In its three decades run, the M3 has had over 80 recalls for multiple issues. The usual list of M3 troubles includes electrical issues, visibility problems & powertrain malfunctions.

Conclusion

BMW’s wide variety of vehicles includes some reliable and some unreliable builds. Despite the constant upgrades & advancement, there are few models that end up with a series of issues. So, if you own one of the less reliable BMWs, check out used BMW engines for sale and save yourself from frequent engine repairs.
