Hunting in the Southeast has been a favorite pastime of many generations. Families enjoy it, friends join and hunting trips are organized. In some states such as Alabama, Mississippi and bordering regions, whitetail deer hunting is high on the hunters’ agenda, and the best lodges are often fully booked way in advance as hunters make sure they find a suitable lease.

Finding the best lease at a property with quality deer is not always that easy, therefore more and more hunters join one of the hunting clubs in the region that they love to visit. In Alabama, for example, well-known wildlife conservation consultants such as, say, Westervelt – and a number of others – also manage hunting clubs and leases, not only for themselves but throughout the region.

This type of service certainly makes it much easier for prospective hunters to find a good lease, whether for a short while only, or long-term. Joining a hunting club has various benefits for the members, which is not the case for the individual hunter, a hunter that operates independently.

Clubs, for example, offer members the ability to hunt on large ...
... tracts without ownership of the land, which is for most out of reach anyway. Clubs are able to negotiate fees, terms and conditions, which the individual may find hard to do. Ethical hunters that belong to a club ensure that regulations, either those imposed by the landowner or his agent, are honored. They go further: for the good of the whole group they may introduce their own regulations to further the ideals of the club’s goals in terms of which they strive to offer everybody a better experience.

All of this is possible only, really, when members of a club see eye to eye with regard to the club’s specific rules and expectations of one another. This means not everybody will be happy with all clubs, which is fine since there are various clubs where hunters can apply for membership. Once members work together for everybody’s benefit and they form a good relationship with the others – even lasting friendships – they find it easy to make their own contribution in terms of which they take an active role in helping to improve and manage wildlife habitat by, for example, improving stands, planting food plots and making sure everybody contributes.

These factors all add to the camaraderie among the members of clubs, which helps to promote them and make them popular. Hunting clubs that are well run remain popular and can be successful, especially if they are well organized. Members have a definite role to play, and so does the agent or consultant that manages clubs on behalf of members and landowners so that everybody benefits, hunters and landowners as well.

Clubs can only be successful if all rules and regulations are honored and when self-imposed rules and restrictions are put in place and enforced so that everybody receives fair treatment and that everybody benefits from efficient and fair practices. This is done to ensure longevity and continuation of the club – for everybody’s benefit.

Once there are rules in place, say, a constitution, everybody understands how the club operates and what reasonable expectations they may have of the club and its members. Some of these rules are stipulated by the agent or landowner, in the case of clubs managed by owners or their agents, or by the members that form their own club. Good governance ensures that clubs operate successfully and that members stay, and whenever there are openings, other members join because they feel that they can become part of a satisfied, well-organized club.

There are many successful clubs in Alabama and other states. Clubs are advertised regularly, either by independent clubs or those that are managed by hunting club managers and wildlife conservation consultants.
