Lyme disease is one of the most prevalent vector-borne bacterial infections. It is also known as Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochetes Borrelia burgdorferi, borrelia mayonii, Borrelia afzelii, and Borrelia garinii. Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) or deer ticks. If not treated adequately on time, the infection can advance and affect different body organs.

Lyme disease symptoms in humans:
Early symptoms of Lyme borreliosis include skin lesions at the site of the tick bite, which progress to big erythematous annular lesions in the later stages. The reddened, circular skin lesion is also called Erythema migrans. Depending on the stages of infection, Lyme disease can present clinically as early localized disease, early disseminated disease, or late disease.
