If you are like anyone that needs eye surgery done to correct a condition or repair and improve eyesight, it seems to be a scary thought. However when it comes to eye surgery and ophthalmologists, you can rest assured that you are in good hands. With many years of experience as well as qualifications that they have the right to be boastful about. Ophthalmologists know exactly how careful they need to be as they are helping one of the most vulnerable parts of the body. While you need to understand you are in good hands, you should be asking your ophthalmologist all the questions you can think of when it comes to your procedure. It is also often helpful to understand what exactly the procedure is about. One of the surgeries that an ophthalmologist performs is vitreoretinal surgery. This particular surgery helps with many different eye conditions.

So what is vitreoretinal surgery? Vitreoretinal surgery refers to any eye surgery that is done deep within the eyes interior tissue. When an ophthalmologist preforms this surgery, they have the aim to restore, preserve or improve vision that has been affected by a number of different ...
... diseases and conditions. While your ophthalmologist will be able to explain this procedure to you in greater detail, these procedures are done under general or local anaesthesia. Here are a few conditions where you can expect a vitreoretinal surgery to be done.

One of the first conditions that will need vitreoretinal surgery would be diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is described simply as a complication that occurs from diabetes, resulting in damage of blood vessels in the retina part of the eye. Like all diabetic conditions, this is caused by the presence of extremely high blood sugar levels. There are three different types of diabetic retinopathy, namely being: background retinopathy; pre-proliferative retinopathy and proliferative retinopathy. These conditions vary in symptoms like bulges developing in blood vessels and bleeding in the actual eye.

Another condition that is ophthalmologists use vitreoretinal surgery for, includes floaters and flashers. Floaters and flashes is a condition in the eye that is generally found more in older people. Floaters and flashes in the eye are caused specifically by the change in the gel-like fluid within the eye. When experiencing floaters, a person can see shapes in their vision tunnel. Flashes are experienced as what feels like little camera flashes. While floaters are not dangerous at all, the combination of flashes and floaters can potentially mean that a person could have an eye condition like retinal detachment. While an ophthalmologist is always the best person to talk to about this, they will explain what vitreoretinal surgery will mean for you and your unique case. The best ophthalmologists will take every case with individual care.

Macular holes is a very common condition where vitreoretinal surgery is used. A macular hole condition can be described as the area called the macular developing a gap in the center of the retina. When a patient experiences a macular hold, they can experience distorted vision. Although this condition is not painful, it does eventually lead to the loss of sight to a certain degree. As mentioned previously, an experienced ophthalmologist will be able to recommend a way forward with this condition and they will be able to repair the eye with vitreoretinal surgery.

While it is a good idea to research your condition, it is always a better idea to trust your ophthalmologist with their recommendations. While eye surgery is a big step, getting a second opinion can also help ease some stress when it comes to the eye surgery.
