It can be tricky to see whether a contact lens is inside out or not, as they are so transparent and thin. The easiest way to tell is to place it on a finger and hold it up to your eyes. If the edges flare out at the top, and it appears U shaped, then you have it the right way round.

Your lenses may have a tint, or a laser etching, that is only visible when they are not inside out. While this type of lens can be a little more expensive, it can be a valuable time saver.

Before applying your contact lenses, you should always wash your hands very thoroughly in hot water, although you should avoid oily or scented soaps, as these may leave a residue on the lens. Also, you should avoid soaps that contain moisturiser or lanolin, as these can irritate the eye.

If your lens is stuck inside the case, you can usually loosen it by shaking the case lightly, and then sliding it out into your hand. Avoid pulling it out with your finger, which can damage the lens.

It can help to have a routine of always putting your lenses on in a specific order, so that you do not get confused as to which lens is intended for which ...
... eye. Keeping your nails short can prevent you from scratching your eyes when putting in or taking out contacts, especially when you are first using them.

Putting contact lenses in is simply a matter of placing the lens on the tip of a clean finger, pulling the top eyelid up with your other hand, and placing the lens in your eye while looking forwards or upwards.

Once the lens is in your eye, you should close your eye gently, roll your eyes in a circular motion to help the lens to get settled, and blink. Inspect the eye in the mirror to see if the lens is in the centre of your eye. If it is, there should be no discomfort, and your vision should be sharp.

It is vital that you wash your hands thoroughly before you begin the process of removing your contact lenses. It can help to place a paper towel over the drain hole in the sink, as this will save you from losing your contact lenses down the drain.
