Here is a technique for removing rigid lenses. Bend over and hold your open palm in front of your eye. Using your other hand, pull the skin on the outer edge of your eyelid towards your ear, and blink. The lens should pop into your open hand fairly easily.

You can use a plunger, available from your optician, to remove contact lenses without getting your hands near your eyes. This can be easier and more hygienic, but you have to be careful only to touch the lens, rather than your eye, with it.

Ultraviolet light has been linked to the formation of cataracts, and is a proven cause of an eye condition known as photokeratitis, also known as snow blindness. Therefore, you should always purchase lenses that have a UV blocking agent in it. You cannot tell this from the lens itself, as the blocker is transparent, but it should be clearly stated on the packaging.

While they can provide some extra protection, UV blocking contacts are not to be used in place of sunglasses in bright conditions, as they do not reduce light levels and do not cover your whole eye.

Sunglasses with a UV blocking agent in the lenses ...
... cover your whole eye as well as the area around it, which gives your eye a lot more protection than you would get with UV blocking contact lenses, but there is nothing to say that you cannot use both.

Put your contact lenses in before you apply any eye makeup. Getting makeup on your contact lens can irritate your eye and blur your vision. Also, non allergenic makeup is a lot kinder to your eyes, making it a lot more appropriate for contact lens wearers than other types of makeup.

Eye shadow cream is less likely to get into your eyes than eye shadow powder, but it can irritate your eyes more if it does. Water based creams tend to irritate the eye less than oil based creams, but if you prefer to use powder, then make sure that your eyes are closed while you are applying it, and brush off any excess before opening your eyes again.

Before you start removing makeup, it is recommended that you take out your contacts first. You should never wear contacts if you have an eye infection, and you can help to prevent this by replacing your makeup on a regular basis and never sharing eye makeup with others.
