When most high school students think of college level testing they can do in high school, most automatically think of AP. Advanced Placement tests are tests that allow students to basically take a college class in high school. At the end of the course, students take the actual AP exam. If they do well, they can receive either advanced placement from a college, or possible advanced placement and real credit for what they tested on.

This is a great concept that more high schoolers should take advantage of. However, there is a better tool that helps students achieve even better results. This tool is the CLEP exams. CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) is actually produced by the same CollegeBoard that produces AP, SAT, and other exams. The CLEP offers several unique benefits to high school students.

Ways CLEP is Better Than AP

-An additional benefit of CLEPs is that they are more widely accepted for credit than APs. Most colleges and universities in the US accept CLEP, and grant real college credit for them. The key is that CLEP tests are always real credit. For AP exam takers, some will be able to earn real credit, but others will only be able to receive advanced standing. These students would still have to make up those extra credits later in their degree.

A Plan for High School Students Taking CLEPs

A good strategy for high school students is for the student to treat the CLEP as a final exam for their high school class. CLEP subjects cover most of the courses that a high school student takes, so a student can earn significant college credit by simply taking the corresponding CLEP after finishing their high school course.
