All About Men’s Sherwani
Sherwani is a long coat-like garment worn by men over a Kurta and Churidar, Pajama or Shalwar, and is related to Achkan or Doublet. Regal clothing inspired by the fascinating stories of the Mughals and nobles of ancient times is a type of clothing that has retained the same regal effect since its inception.
Origin and History
It was originally a clever combination of the Shalwar Kameez and the British frock coat. It was originally worn only by Indian royals and noble kings as their basic attire, displaying wealth and prosperity through the decorative embellishments that adorned the beautiful garment. It was adopted as a dressing style by a variety of people, regardless of social standing, sometime in the late 18th century.
It was also a popular form of attire during the Aligarh movement, which occurred prior to Indian independence because many students and teachers wore it. Following this, several Indian and Pakistani leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, wore Sherwanis over cotton vest and made them an essential part of their ...

Style & Variety
In appearance, a Sherwani is similar to an Achkan. It is a knee-length, close-fitting garment worn over a Kurta. It is worn with a Churidar or a Salwar and has several buttons running down the front. The look isn't complete without a pair of Juttis (ethnic Indian shoes), which add a regal and sophisticated touch to the entire ensemble.
It is available in a variety of fabrics and embellishments, the majority of which are woven in Silk. Sherwani, on the other hand, is now designed in cotton, brocade, and jacquard due to its global recognition and demand.
Colors range from enticing corals and reds to mysterious and alluring blacks and dark greens. Off-white or creamy colors with gold embroidery are also making an appearance on the fashion runways. Because of its stylish and comfortable features, it has become an essential wedding attire for men.
Innovations
Because of the regal intricacies involved, Sherwani was originally designed only for men. Modern women seeking confidence in various attires, on the other hand, have discovered Sherwani, a good choice for regal and bold looks. Women wear Sherwani Coats over their Salwar Kameez or Lehenga to add a touch of sophistication to their outfits, which are similar to Kurtas.
Wearing the Attire
A Sherwani is the first choice of an Indian groom because it exudes a regal and majestic aura, which any young man would want to feel on his wedding day. However, it is not limited to weddings and can make a stunning style statement for any formal event that requires anyone to dress immaculately.
Accessorizing the Attire
A stole or scarf wrapped around the neck is the one major accessory used to enhance the look of the Sherwani paired with a handloom lungi. Stoles are most commonly made in red, silver, or gold. In addition, a gold chain or a chunky bracelet can be worn to complete the look.
Interesting Facts and Comparisons
Prior to its arrival in India, it was worn by Turkish and Persian nobles.
A dhoti can also replace a Churidar or a pyjama.
