Monsoon comes and fills us all with life and energy. It brings with it an immense relief after the scorching heat of summer. However, rain creates a conducive environment for mosquitoes and other bacteria to multiply, thanks to the humidity. Dengue, malaria, flu, throat infection and cold are some of the common health problems people face during the rainy season. But if you were to follow the health precautions mentioned below then you can enjoy the season without worrying about diseases.

1 – Drink clean water

Water resources are likely to get contaminated during heavy rains and drinking such water often leads to various stomach-related problems. The most convenient way to ensure a clean water supply is to install a water filter at your home depending on the water filtration requirements of your locality. Another effective way to ensure clean water is by boiling it. Make sure you carry water while travelling or use the packaged water.

2 – Add probiotics and vegetables to your diet

The best way to have optimal gut health is by adding probiotics ...
... to your diet like curd, yoghurt, etc. By doing so, you can ensure healthy levels of good gut bacteria. You should abstain from having stale food this season as it may have already attracted bacteria that can cause infections. Instead, you should be having plenty of fresh vegetables to ensure maximum fibre and nutrients for your body. Such a diet will not only provide you with all the nutrition but it’ll also help you stay fit through the season.

3 – Don’t binge on street food

Street food is often spicy fried food that can cause indigestion, acidity and bloating. And the biggest concern is you would never know how that food gets prepared. If the water and vegetables used in its preparations were exposed to constant humidity and contaminants in the air, then you could get infected by eating such street food. Eating such food can have dire consequences like diarrhoea and cholera. So eat food cooked under hygienic conditions.

4 – Use home remedies to ward off symptoms

Well, sometimes you’re likely to give in to that urge of doing some rain dance. But the next day you might develop a throat infection, cold or even flu. In such a case, it’s best to practice sore throat remedies and find relief. You can do salt-water gargle, have warm fluids like soups and kadha and take steam. Home remedies can alleviate common symptoms of cold and cough, helping you feel better. So next time you have any symptoms, take quick action before the bacteria grows on you.

5 – Protect yourself from mosquitoes

Avoid walking on the pavements and roads that are filled with rainwater. Because such water provides a perfect breeding environment for mosquitoes which may carry hazardous diseases like dengue and malaria. So while you’re going out, you could wear full-sleeved clothes and apply mosquito repellent on your body. And while sleeping in, you could use mosquito nets to have a peaceful sleep.

In the end

As much as zeal rains bring to us, it also paves the breeding ground for life-threatening bacteria and insects. From the common cold to serious diseases like cholera and malaria, you must protect yourself from it all. Well, you can find relief using cough syrup in case of a viral cold. But if you neglect your health during rainy seasons, you might have to face some serious health problems. So keep in mind that precaution is better than cure.
