Making the decision to pursue an RCDD is a significant commitment that reflects your desire to advance in the industry. Obtaining this certification increases your marketability in the telecommunications industry, but funding, studying, and testing for this certification can be costly. After passing your exam, creating a maintenance plan may be the best decision you can make to keep your credentials up to date.
So, where do you begin? Determine your own personal goals. Are you willing to travel to BICSI conferences and outlying areas for RCDD classroom training? Or are you looking for online training? Are you able to manage the time and finances to attend one BICSI conference every three years outside of the BICSI conferences?
No single strategy works for everyone. One-size-fits-all is out of the question on any path to success. It is up to you to determine which ...
... path will lead to your success. It is required to attend at least one conference in order to renew your RCDD designation. You must also complete 30 hours of continuing education. This can be accomplished by participating in webinars, BICSI regional events, or BICSI-certified manufacturer-based training.
So, what are your alternatives? You can further your education by learning something new to add to your credentials, or you can retake courses you've already completed for certification. Links to course providers can be found on the BICSI website. The costs of travel and lodging may differ depending on your location.
Approximately 65 percent of RCDDs have been accredited for more than four years, and 35 percent have been accredited for more than ten years. Several RCDDs are business partners or own their businesses. Approximately 60% of RCDDs who are not self-employed say their employer pays for their continuing education.

How to Become a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD)
Larger and government jobs are increasingly requiring an RCDD from an internal employee of your company who is working on projects. But, you ask, how do you get through the certification process? Here's how it's done:
The RCDD, which was founded in 1984, is the most well-known of all Building Industry Consulting Services International (BICSI) accreditations. The BICSI is a professional association for information and communications technology (ICT) professionals that provides resources, training, and certifications. You can prepare for your RCDD certification exam once you have mastered data communication and telecommunication technology systems, as well as integrating systems into industry-specific infrastructures.
Basic Requirements
A minimum of two years of ICT design experience, three years of combined education, and approved ICT licenses are required.
Experience with project specifications and site surveys
Certification Period
A three-year RCDD certification is valid. Certification holders must complete 45 continuing education credits (CECs) through BICSI and attend one BICSI conference during these three years. To be certified, you must have at least two years of ICT design experience, as well as three years of combined education and experience. Site surveys, first-hand experience working with architects or other industry professionals, and project specifications are all examples of design experience.
All Registered Communications Distribution Designers have access to a dependable source of professional, technical, and industry information, as well as an exclusive network of professionals with whom they can share ideas and exchange new information, including accurate knowledge of emerging technologies. An RCDD will ensure the best in long-term cabling solutions, large or small, for all cabling and infrastructure to be properly designed and implemented.
There is a lot to invest in yourself and your career, and while an RCDD is a difficult credential to obtain and keep, most RCDDs would recommend the credential to others in the industry with a background in IT system design and implementation.
