Hi Vis Workwear Is Essential And Guarantee To Keep Workers Safe And Visible
High-visibility (hi vis) clothing is a common safety gear worn over personal clothing for safety, protection, and identification and is an international legal requirement. Hi vis workwear is intended for off-road use, roadway use and public safety. Some work environments require extra visibility because of hazardous conditions or to enable the person to be seen while they work in the dark.
There are three components of Hi vis clothing that affect the design and performance of every part of hi vis clothing. The material must be fluorescent to boost visibility during the day and intensify visibility at night. There must have reflective strips to improve visibility during the dark hours of the day. Reflective strips need a light source to be effective to create retro-reflection.
There are different types of hi vis reflective angle strips but the most common will have reflective glass beads, which need to be maintained well to stay functional and safety compliant. The reflective strips wrap around the legs and sleeves.
The material must be contrasted in colour with darker-coloured parts less sensitive to dirt ...
... than the fluorescent material and reflective strips. Hi vis workwear is designed to suit different types of hazardous working environments ensuring the safety of the workers.
The purpose is to ensure the high visibility clothing to reduce the risks of incidents and accidents from happening and improve overall safety for workers. There are many professions that require hi vis workwear such as emergency services, heavy equipment and construction workers, security personnel, warehouses, road and rail workers and the military to name a few.
Hi vis workwear is recognised throughout the world and is mostly seen on construction sites. Construction has been noted as the most dangerous of work environments and labourers are expected to wear the required safety clothing in the correct form before they can begin to work on the construction site.
It plays an invaluable part of daily working as lives have been saved time and again due to the use of hi vis workwear. By design, it identifies three standard classes: Class 1 provides a minimal amount of visibility, Class 2 provides a higher level of visibility and Class 3 provides the highest level of the required visibility. This is determined by the amount of fluorescent fabric and reflective strips used for each hi vis item of clothing.
Workers will stand out from the crowd when they wear hi vis workwear and it creates professionalism and personalised branding will identify certain groups of workers and their managers, including the company they work for.
The colours used are to differentiate between different professions and ensure workers are highly visible, especially around hazardous materials or working with machinery or on construction sites. Health and safety experts consider only orange and yellow coloured hi vis to provide sufficient visibility.
Although companies are permitted to customise or personalise hi vis workwear for their business, it must be understood that the company must ensure the alterations or additions do not compromise the design or any of the safety features that would cause the hi vis workwear to become non-compliant.
Hi vis workwear is also useful for general health and safety around the workplace and can be seen on the road worn by cyclists, motorcyclists and joggers. Oncoming motorists are able to see those who are travelling or jogging in dimly lit areas and in the evening.
High-visibility workwear must comply with the 3 standards of Highway Visibility Clothing and come in an assortment of sizes, tones and different colours in fluorescent breathable materials, reflective strips of variable widths and lengths and contrast material that is administered by EN ISO 20471.
