A prescription is intended to ensure that people experience easy and clear vision and every person’s prescription is unique to them. Before looking to purchase prescription glasses, it is vital to have an updated prescription, within the last 2 years, provided by a registered optician.

When placing an order online for prescription glasses and unsure how to enter the prescription correctly it would be a good idea to select an option to send the prescription details later. Errors are common and it is easier to avoid input mistakes by taking a photo of the prescription and sending the image by email after placing the online order.

Ask the optician as many questions as possible to understand the prescription that is issued. There will be abbreviations and numbers and it is advisable to become familiar with them.

SPH- means ‘Sphere-’ and indicates short-sightedness where the person finds it difficult to see objects that are further away or at a long distance. SPH+ means ‘Sphere+’ and indicates long-sightedness and the person finds it difficult to see close objects.

The numbers can differ from ...
... small to large numbers and indicate the strength of the prescription. The higher the number means the stronger the prescription will be and a lower number will be a lighter prescription. The lens will have a greater or shorter curvature depending on the strength of the prescription. A higher prescription will mean the lens will have a greater curvature.
Plano- indicates whether the person is long-sighted or short-sighted.

CYL- means ‘Cylinder’ and the figures represent the degree of distortion like astigmatism, caused by an irregular-shaped cornea. If there is no number then there is no distortion and the eye shape is spherical. The higher the number will indicate whether the eyes are more of an oval shape and a lower number will indicate a deviation from a spherical shape, which means the eyes are almost round.

Axis is the degree of the direction of astigmatism. This number will help the laboratory create the lenses to a specific position and fit them to the correct angle inside the frame, this does not have a direct impact on vision.

Prism is a type of lens that helps to correct double vision and headaches where the muscles of the eye are not balanced correctly in such a case would be a lazy eye. The Base number informs the laboratory where to place the prism in the lenses.

ADD is short for reading addition and applies only to reading glasses, bifocal or varifocal glasses. ADD is sometimes written “Near” on the prescription but for distant vision, ADD will not be written on the prescription. Although it may be written only once on the prescription it usually applies to both eyes as the values will be identical.

The prescription details must be correctly provided when placing an order for glasses as it will become costly to rectify any mistakes.

Prescription glasses that are purchased online are cheaper than those that are bought from an optical store and often companies offer online purchasing promotions. There is a greater range of prescription lenses to choose from with lower overheads due to the various promotional offers and packages.

Online stores provide easy browsing of their products. Once the details of the prescription lens have been correctly captured, and if required, including additions such as coating or tints, the frame should be chosen. Depending on the measurements of the lens, the selection of frames will indicate what is available that would suit the size of the lens.

Online stores usually offer the convenience of same-day deliveries, free deliveries, or a discounted price on purchases over a price range.
