The eyes are very delicate and sensitive and are an important part of our body. If there is a slight problem or infection in the eyes, the symptoms start appearing immediately. Madras eye or pink eye is a common problem related to the eyes, commonly known as conjunctivitis.

It can occur in both acute and chronic forms, and it gets better on its own in two weeks.
However, conjunctivitis causes severe symptoms that require immediate treatment in many people. Although this problem can happen to anyone, it is more prone to occur in a hot and humid environment.

What is conjunctivitis (pink eye)?

Conjunctivitis is commonly referred to as "Pink eye", as pinkness or redness of the conjunctiva is one of the most common noticeable symptoms.

That is a type of infection that causes swelling of the eyes. This infection occurs on the outer layer of the eye (Conjunctivitis) and the inner surface of the eyelid. Due to this, the eyes become red, swollen, and sticky (muddy), and there is a sensation of pricking ...
... hair. During this problem, there is a lot of pain in the eyes.

The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that covers the sclera's outer surface and the eyelids' inner surface. It also helps keep the eyelids and eyeballs moist.

The small blood vessels in the conjunctiva swell and become more clearly visible. Due to conjunctivitis, the white part of the eyes appears red or pink. Hence it is also called pink eye.

Conjunctivitis Symptoms

The symptoms also appear according to conjunctivitis you are suffering from. But in general, see the signs:

Light Red Eye
Watery Eyes
Itchiness Eyes
Eye Ache
Trouble With Light
Mud Accumulation In The Eyes
Eye Drops And A Gritty Feeling In The Eye
Reddening Of The Eyelids And Swollen Eyelids

Types & Causes

There are generally three types of conjunctivitis-

Viral Conjunctivitis

Most cases are caused by adenovirus. Apart from this, herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, and other viruses, including coronavirus, can also cause it. Viral conjunctivitis often occurs in one eye, spreading to the other eye in a few days.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis

Some bacterial infections can also cause conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis caused by both viruses and bacteria is contagious. It can be spread through direct or indirect contact with discharge from the eyes of an infected person. Infection can occur in one or both eyes.

Allergic Conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis can result from exposure to allergens such as pollen.

Treatment for Pink Eye

The treatment of conjunctivitis depends on its factors. In most cases, this problem is caused by chemical exposure, which gets better on its own within a day. Viral, bacterial, and allergic conjunctivitis can be prevented by:

Viral Conjunctivitis: There is no treatment available for viral conjunctivitis. Although its symptoms are usually mild and symptoms improve on their own in 7-8 days. By the way, warm compresses (immersing a cloth in lukewarm water and placing it on the eyes) relieve symptoms.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Antibiotics are the most common treatment for any bacterial infection. In bacterial conjunctivitis, antibiotics, eye drops, and ointments (ointments/gels) can lead to normal and healthy eyes within a few days. Balm for children is easy to apply.

Chemical Conjunctivitis: Eyes can be better treated with a saline solution. If chemicals are spread in the eyes, in this situation, wash them with water for some time to avoid permanent damage to the eyes. It is also possible to treat it with topical steroids.

Allergic Conjunctivitis: In mild cases, artificial tear eye drops and cold compresses can provide relief from allergic conjunctivitis. In severe cases, inflammation of the eye also occurs. The doctor may prescribe medications such as allergy (antihistamines), anti-inflammatory (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), or topical steroid eye drops.

How can you prevent conjunctivitis?

Apart from maintaining cleanliness, the best ways to avoid and prevent conjunctivitis are by keeping a few other things in mind:
• Whenever possible, do not touch your eyes with your hand.
• Wash hands with soap and water from time to time.
• Do not share your things like towel, pillow, clean tissue, eye cosmetics (eye makeup), etc., with anyone.
• Keep your handkerchiefs, pillow covers, towels, etc. things clean.

Conclusion

In the eye, there is a thin transparent membrane called the conjunctiva, which covers the inner surface of the eyelids and the white part of the eyeball. When it becomes inflamed or infected, the small blood vessels or cells become more active, and this condition is called conjunctivitis or "pink eye,".

Conjunctivitis causes a lot of itching, redness, and pain in a person's eyes, which leads to an inability to see and a lot of discomfort. In severe cases, there may be a blemish in the eyes.
If someone around you is suffering from conjunctivitis, you should stay away from him. Never look directly into the eyes of such a person or use his used things like a handkerchief and towel etc.
It is important to talk to a doctor if any serious symptoms arise in the eyes.
