12 Amazing Science, Astronomy, And Ocean Science Facts
OurScienceBuzz.com - Science! For some reason, most people forget about the value of the scientific world the moment they graduate from High School. In fact, most people find scientific facts and discoveries boring and not worth that time, but it’s time to change that perspective with these amazing facts:
#1: There Are More Bacterial Cells On A Human Body Than Actual Human Cells
Every human body is just a walking petri dish of bacteria. There are about 10 times more bacterial cells on and all over your body compared to human cells. Don’t freak out though. Most of the bacteria are actually good and helpful.
#2: The Great Barrier Reef Is Considered The Largest Living Structure
Stretching over 2,000 km long, the Great Barrier Reef comprises a living coral reef. The entire interlinked system includes over 3,000 reefs plus 900 different coral islands.
#3: Killer Whales Aren’t Whales
The term killer whales is a misnomer. Although technically they are cetaceans under the toothed whale order, their "melon" (a fatty deposit on their head that helps with echolocation) and their teeth make ...
... orcas closer to dolphins than whales.
#4: The Moon Is A Lemon (Shaped Object)
A fun astronomy fact is the shape of the moon. Although we see it as a round object in the night sky, it’s lemon-shaped with the poles flattened and bulges on its sides.
#5: The Flavor Is In Your Saliva
It might sound gross, but you need your saliva to taste your favorite foods. The saliva breaks down food, and these chemicals are what taste buds detect! Amazingly gross, isn’t it?
#6: More People Have Visited The Moon Than The Deepest Part Of The Ocean
The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean and only three people have been there. However, up to a dozen people have stepped on the moon.
#7: Octopuses Are Very Weird
Anyone studying ocean science will tell you that an octopus is the closest thing we have to an alien. They have three hearts, nine brains, AND blue blood!
#8: Neptune Orbits Very Slowly
It takes Neptune 165 years to orbit around the Sun. Since it was discovered in 1846, it has only completed its orbit once in 2011.
#9: Pluto Is Even Slower
If you think 165 years for a full orbit is slow, it is nothing to Pluto’s 248 years. This means it has yet to complete an orbit since it was discovered in 1930.
#10: 90% Of Volcanic Activity Happens Underwater
The South Pacific alone has over 1,133 volcanoes! So there really is no competition on where the majority of volcanic activity occurs.
#11: Hawaii Is Inching Closer To Alaska
Due to the Earth’s active tectonic plates, Hawaii moves 7.5cm closer to Alaska with each passing year.
#12: Days Are Getting Longer
The Earth is spinning slower. Each year the planet takes a little longer to complete a revolution. But the change is minimal that in a thousand years, one full day will only be 200th of a second longer.
