Horse Racing: 2010 Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes has itself in an interesting predicament on a yearly basis. This race has the potential to be the biggest race in all of Horse Racing, but it also has the potential to be a very irrelevant race in the scheme of the sport.
The Belmont Stakes is the 3rd race of the Triple Crown, the most desirable award in Horse Racing. A horse and jockey win the Triple Crown by winning the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. If a contestant wins the first two races, then the whole world has their eyes on the Belmont Stakes. This is in hopes of seeing the historic event of someone winning the Triple Crown. However, if two different horses win the first two races, then the third race is worth nothing more than the prize money for winning the race. Win there is no contestant for winning the Triple Crown the race attracts much less attention around the world. Unfortunately, the 2010 Belmont Stakes had no contestant for the Triple Crown.
The Kentucky Derby was won by Super Saver, but Super Saver did not manage to pull out a victory in the Preakness Stakes. After losing in the Preakness, it ...
... was determined that the horse would not participate in the Belmont Stakes. Lookin at Lucky, the winner of the Preakness, similarly decided to drop out of the race. This meant that there would be no winners of the first two legs of the Triple Crown present at the Belmont Stakes. This provided for a field of unknown or unproven horses to contend to be the winner of the race.
The favorites to win the race were Ice Box and First Dude. These two horses had mixed results in the race. Despite being the overall favorite, Ice Box was not able to find success in the race. This horse was mostly irrelevant, finishing sixth overall.
First Dude made his impact felt on the race. First Dude took an early lead and had control of the race early. Interactif, Uptowncharlie and Game on Dude were the other horses close behind, lobbying for position. As the race progressed Droselmeyer began to move up the ranks. The horse pushed past Fly Down and found itself in 5th place with a half mile to go. The horse moved to the outside and made a push to take the lead as the home stretch came. Fly Down, the horse that was just passed also made a big push at the end of the race.
Fly Down and Drosselmeyer both progressed up the ranks until they came up on First Dude. First Dude was not able to sustain the lead and both of these horses passed First Dude, leaving First Dude with a 3rd place finish. Drosselmeyer was able to sustain his lead and ended up as the winner of the 2010 Belmont Stakes while Fly Down finished in a close second place.
Mike Smith was the winning jockey for Drosselmeyer at the 2010 Belmont Stakes.
