The shutters can only be operated by people who have these devices, which adds an extra layer of security: conventional locks are much easier to circumvent.

Roller shutters are available in a variety of styles. The most fundamental is colour: most shutters can be powder coated in any of the standard RAL colours. Another option is to incorporate gaps into the slats that comprise the shutter. This is especially appropriate for shops, as the increased visibility more than compensates for the small amount of impact resistance sacrificed.

In addition to standard models, roller shutters come in a variety of variations designed for use in specific situations. Fire-resistant roller shutters are made of specially treated fire-resistant materials and are used in areas where extra fire protection is required, such as student housing. Rapid doors, also known as rapid-action doors, are used in areas with high human or vehicular traffic, such as cold storage units for foodstuffs. In this case, the shutters also serve a temperature control function: a standard shutter would allow too much heat to enter a controlled temperature area, whereas a rapid-action door would ensure that such disruption was kept to a minimum. This would make a significant difference in an area where the door is constantly in use.
