Hello From Nova Scotia- A Halifax City Tour
Okay, in the few hours that I had spent in the city, Halifax had already shown itself from its best side. After my late arrival yesterday, I had a chance for a short walk along the waterfront property Nova Scotia before I saw an incredible performance of DRUM, which is an exalting and exhilarating musical kaleidoscope of the four main cultures of Nova Scotia, which are Celtic, Aboriginal, Acadian and Black.
This morning, I wake up early as I wanted to explore the waterfront property Nova Scotia in the daylight before joining a city tour that would provide me a good overview of what Halifax has to offer. I understood that the batteries of my digital camera were quite low and wanted to purchase some replacement AA batteries, so I crossed the city from one location to another to get batteries, but alas. Stories that I was directed towards were either still closed or they just run out of batteries. Okay, that implies that by 9 AM, I had already spent a 40 minutes journey across the downtown core and getting a bit of an overview of the central part of the city.
At ...
... 9 AM, I joined a group of tourists to go for a city tour. What makes this city tour unique is that historically inspired trolleys comes with humorous, knowledgeable guides that are dressed up. On this sunny October day, our guide has extensive historic knowledge and witty comments kept the entire vehicle entertained.
Near to the , residential property in Halifax, we made our way to the Grand Parade, which used to be a parade ground and these days a large public square which is anchored on the southern side by St Paul’s Church, the first and the oldest church of Halifax dating back to 1749, when the city was founded. On the northern side, we witnessed Halifax City Hall, whose construction was commenced in 1887. In the centre of the Grand Parade is the Cenotaph, a war memorial erected in 1929 that memorializes three major conflicts, which are the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War.
The exhibit about the Halifax Explosion boasts newspaper clippings, historical pictures and explanations about this enormous blunder. The Titanic Exhibit upstairs actually boasts dozens of photographs and 20 genuine artifacts from the Titanic. First and foremost, it is the only intact Titanic deck chair in the world. This chair had actually been given to the minister that had performed so many of the burials at sea and was donated by one of his grand kids to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
I didn’t have the time to discover the rest of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which boasts a complete host of extra interesting exhibits. Now it was time for a fast lunch and then my next stop.
