It can’t be said enough: Content is key when targeting Search Engine Optimization. Since the goal is traffic to your site and getting the highest search engine rank possible, and ultimately sales, you need to understand keywords and keyword density. You want to be first in a search, and content is what drives those engines. There’s plenty of Flash animation but what gets the engines to actually find you is content; primarily textual content.

It’s not as easy as it sounds. You’re thinking, “Well, since I’m selling car parts, shouldn’t I just mention ‘car parts’ a bunch of times in a row, or ‘car part’, or ‘automotive parts’ just over and over again?” The answer is “no” and here are two reasons why:

1. Search engines look for well put-together, grammatically correct full sentences, and repeating your keywords over and over again isn’t going to fool ...
... them.

2. Once you get a customer to your site, do you really want them to think that your only goal was to get them there and not sell them anything or provide them something of value?

The trick is to mention your keywords and phrases, but not make it seem like you are doing it intentionally. That’s where experienced SEO copywriters come in. They seamlessly blend in keywords to relevant content that not only gets the search engines to hit your site, but keeps customers interested and compelled enough to make a purchase. Good content will keep the potential customer locked to your page, convincing them that you are an expert in your field, which your products or services are the best around, and they should choose YOU over all the competition. Relevant, well-written copy is something SEO copywriters do every day. Good content drives the search engines to your site through use of keywords and the density of those words in your site’s content.

Good SEO content provides an easy read. You want the regular person to be able to understand and empathize to an extent with what you’re saying. You want to be engaging without being condescending. You can’t get too cutesy, can’t be too folksy, unless your market is kitsch. You want to be able to plug in your keywords frequently, but without only writing for the search engines. Because you’re not! Once you get the potential customer to the site, you want text that keeps them there for the product or service, not because you’ve “fooled” them into landing there in the first place.

It’s a good idea to throw in bolded headings or subheadings containing your keywords and phrases. It not only brings the reader’s eye to a new content piece, it ups your keyword content and keeps the search engines engaged. Another good idea is to keep content fresh, updating your site as frequently as several times a week; adding a dynamic site map insures that the search engine crawlers keep returning each time you add new content. That keeps your site relevant in the eyes of the search engines, and raises the chances of you getting the ranks you’re seeking.
