Wingshooting was developed as a sport in the mid-seventeenth century. These hunters were originally known as fowlers, while birds were culled with a fowling piece (old-fashioned version of a shotgun). This has become a fast growing traditional sport, which has been sustained across generations.

The hunters grip should be perfect, not too tight or too loose, while the trigger hand should be relaxed, like a friendly handshake. The thumb should be rolled gently over the top and then the trigger should be lightly squeezed at firing point, with a cradled forearm.
Pushing the shotgun toward the target, the trigger being close to the face, by now the target should be the main point of focus. Noticing the shotgun bead without any adjustment of the eyes, while shifting the bodyweight to the front foot, start leaning into the gun. Overhead shooting will require a weight shift to the back foot, aligned with body position, with the shotgun remaining comfortably within the hands of the hunter.
Techniques for perfect results while wingshooting, is of the utmost importance and needs to be followed to achieve success. Keeping the front knee bent and the rear leg straight, right-handed shooters should align toward 11o’clock for the left foot and 12o’clock for the right foot. A square-footed approach will suit a heavier hunter better for proper balance. When aiming for closer range targets, shotgun triggers are pulled as the muzzle passes over the target head. Hence, for the longer range, the pull of the trigger is delayed until after the target has moved over. It is important to remember that practice makes perfect.
