4 Ways The Pandemic Has Changed Home Design
The pandemic has changed lives around the world, and for many of us, those changes have become permanent. Some changes are more desirable and necessary than others, while there are plenty that have enhanced our lives for the better, such as a renewed focus on the importance of our home spaces and how we design and decorate them.
With the virus having forced millions of us to spend way more time in our homes than we might ordinarily have, the way we view our living spaces has changed. No longer simply spaces to sit, sleep and cook in, our homes have become safe havens, literally, and more and more of us have been trying to make the spaces both functional and inspiring, so that for those times when we are stuck at home, we can feel safe, comfortable and happy.
From structural changes to the layout of a room, to aesthetic changes like the addition of soft furnishings, homes design has changed, and absolutely for the better; here are some of the ways home design has altered:
1. Privacy is back in fashion
While open layout spaces have their place, the pandemic has encouraged us to look at large spaces ...
... in a different way, and with many of us thrown together with family members for days, weeks and even months on end, privacy has become something of a priority.
Smaller rooms within a larger space give individual family members or housemates the opportunity to enjoy some time alone, and many modern home buyers are now seeking to live in properties that give them the privacy they need.
2. Home offices are in big demand
With more and more people making the choice to work from home nowadays, and some companies having adopted permanent remote working practices following on from the pandemic, home offices are in big demand. And we’re not just talking about a corner of a room with a small table and a chair, we’re talking about spaces that are reminiscent of traditional offices, that allow the individual to complete a full day’s work, and then close the door behind them and unwind in their own home.
3. Underutilised spaces are being transformed
With homes being used for longer periods of time during quarantine periods, and strict lockdowns keeping households confined to their homes, there became an almost desperate need to create more space, and what better way to do it than by using an underutilised room or area of the home, and turning it into a livable one. Attics, garages and spare bedrooms are busily being converted into offices, rooms for crafting and even gyms, and this is a trend set to continue for the foreseeable future.
4. Homeowners are requesting bigger, bolder colours
While designers may always have been ready and willing to paint homes in bright, bold colours, the average homeowner in the UK wasn’t quite so keen…until now, that is! Being forced to stare at dull, neutral walls all day long has made many modern homeowners rethink their choice of colours, and from bright primary colours, to feature walls and statement tiles,UK homes are busy representing the colours of the rainbow with their decor!
This is also reflected in the use of brightly coloured soft furnishings such as throws, cushions and rugs.
Home design has come a long way in recent years, with many more homeowners adopting bright colours to cheer up their drab living spaces; trying to bring a little more love, light and harmony to their lives.
