If you are thinking of installing a wideband oxygen sensor, then you will want to attach a wideband air fuel gauge as well so that you can visually monitor your air to fuel ratio. It is important to recognize how essential it is to wire the sensor and the gauge properly. Most gauges come with the sensor and the controller in the kit. Usually there will also be detailed directions for how to install the wideband gauge. It is important to follow the directions carefully because if the unit is wired wrong, it will not report accurate information to the engine performance management system.

If there is anywhere for an issue to arise with the sensor, it would be with installing the power and the ground wires properly. If you are installing a permanent wideband sensor, then you should run the power through a switched power source. This can be run through the circuit that senses the position of the ignition key. Basically the sensor should be switched on when the key is inserted into the ignition. Ideally if you have the power source hot during the cranking phase, you ensure that the sensor heats up as quickly as possible ...
... so that it starts to give out an accurate reading on the air to fuel ratio in the engine. The downside of not having the power source hot during the cranking phase is that the sensor has to restart the heating process after the crank.

The ground is equally important if not more important for the sensor to work properly. The sensor needs to be grounded directly to the engine block and not any of the other traditional grounding positions in order for the wideband air fuel gauge to get a proper reading. That means that a chassis or a body ground is not enough to make sure that the sensor is sufficiently grounded, and a screw and a nut bolted on to some part of your car is not going to cut it either. If you want your wideband gauge to work right the sensor has to be properly grounded.

A wideband air fuel gauge is a precision instrument designed to provide you with very accurate information about the air to fuel ratio in your engine. The grounding equipment is often included along with the components and it should be used to provide a quality ground for the wideband sensor and then the gauge should be connected based on the instructions that come with the kit.

A wideband gauge is the best way to make sure that you always have a read on the fuel conditions in your engine. The only way to definitively know that your wideband air fuel gauge is providing you with accurate information is to be extremely careful during the installation process. The gauge is the best way to make on the fly adjustments to your air to fuel mixture based on the current engine conditions. Wire up your sensor and gauge right and watch your engine roar.
