This is a big decision, often based on numerous factors from religious beliefs to finances, ecological awareness to what your loved one requested. Before you make a choice, you need to know what you are choosing.

Cremation is growing as a preferred funeral option, over burials, with many countries having more than seventy percent cremation rates and thirty percent burial rates. Cremation is a thermal process that reduces the human remains to tiny bone fragments, own as ashes. The most common process is using extreme heat. Some people are afraid of burials, which comes from the phobia of being buried alive.

Once you have made the decision to go ahead with cremation, you will need to authorise the process. This involves legally identifying the loved one by an appointed next of kin. You will need to sign the authorisation documents and pay for the charges. At this point they take your loved one from their pace of death to the mortuary, preparing them for cremation.

There are additional things you may want to consider, such as sending some special clothing for your loved one to wear during the cremation. This ...
... may be their military uniform or their favourite clothes. You will also need to decide if you want to take any jewellery from the loved one, or let them be cremated with it. This is a personal choice which can be discussed directly with the crematorium specialist.

Some people want to include some keepsakes in the crematorium casket. This may be a treasured photograph, some family members write notes or letters, placing them in the casket prior to the cremation taking place. Again this is a personal decision which you can discuss with your loved one. Ensure you let whoever is handling the cremation for you, know your additional wishes.

You or one of your family members may want to be present, even participate in the cremation. This is a way to let go, but this must be discussed in advance. To make it easier, some companies will offer a complete cremation service, where they collect, cremate and deliver the ashes at an affordable fee. If you want to be involved, then ensure you advise them well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Another big decision you need to make is what you are going to do with the ashes. Most crematoriums will provide your loved ones ashes in a plastic bag, sealed in a biodegradable box. If you want to keep them close, then you may want to purchase an urn or maybe you want to have the urn at their memorial celebration and then scatter the ashes somewhere that was special to your loved one, such as the beach, in the ocean or on their favourite golf course.

Most people have some idea on what they want once they have passed and they will share this information with their closest family members. Maybe they want to be buried next to their late spouse, maybe they prefer being cremated and have set ideas on where they want to scatter their ashes, while some may want to donate their body organs to those that need them or donate their body to science. Knowing what your loved one wants can make funeral arrangements much easier.
